Dear Val,
storing the wine in its orginal wooden case is perfectly safe. I've been doing this for 23 years with excellent result as long as you follow the basic rules of temp, humidity and light. I would also argue that it is a necessity if you want to resell your wine with optimum return on your investment.

Storing wine in the boxes may not be an appropriate solution, especially if it is wooden boxes.
When stored in a wooden box, the wood absorbs most of the humidity, making the air inside dryer and dryer. As said in the video, the cork needs a certain rate of humidity (usually between 60 and 95%, above this rate the cork may start to mold, under this rate the cork starts to dry and the wine may oxidate).
The wooden box are designed for transportation, it is not a long term storage solution.
