Region 'Red South America' - Year 1993
Once again, not much to report on the weather front. Most of the action continues to centre on wineries, especially in Chile, where hot water is being introduced to replace simple running water in many wineries. The steady march of stainless steel and temperature controlled fermentation, using selected yeasts, continues apace. Stainless steel technology is now the big issue in Chile, although it has yet to really take hold in Argentina, where big producers fear the size of the investment needed for the change-over.
There was no change in the regions producing the best wines between 1992 and 1993. Maipo, Lontue and Casablanca continued to be the primary Chilean regions. Similarly Mendoza in Agrentina was able to rest on its laurels.
