Region 'Germany' - Year 1979

Rating Drinkability Style
starstarstarstarstar drink now A marked improvement on the previous year, this vintage produced some reasonably good wines

Weather Conditions

After a very cold winter the budding was late but sunny weather allowed the vines to catch up and the flowering was on time. Despite much rain, the development of the vines was very favourable during July, August and September, though the grapes took a long time to ripen. The vintage started in fine weather at the end of October.

Best Appellations

The eventual quality was excellent, especially in Mosel/Saar/Ruwer and some Ausleses developed with time long luscious flavours not unlike those of the more glamorous 1983s. Fine wines were also to be found in the Nahe, Pfalz and Franken. The fame of 1975 and 1976 detracted attention from this very good vintage and the best wines are still at their peak.

Best Producers

Fritz Haag with their Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhrs, J.J. Prum with their Wehlener Sonnenuhrs and von Schubert with Maximin Grunhaus made great wines.
