Region 'Italy Piedmont' - Year 1979
|drink now||A good year of above average quality|
A cool start to the year with widespread frost, mist and some snow. April and May were much milder months with less rain than usual and some bright, clear weather, June began well with warm, dry weather for flowering, though there was some rain at the end of the month. July was quite hot and dry and the good weather continued throughout August interrupted by a few light rains. Temperatures in September were higher than average with a few light showers in the middle of the month. The problem with 1979 was a wet October with steady rain for most of the month.
A potentially great vintage was diluted by autumn rain. Many delicious, early-drinking wines were made. Few have lasted beyond the 1980s.
Good Barolo was made by Cavalotto, Ceretto, Bartolo Mascarello and Giacomo Conterno. Barbaresco from Gaja may still be holding up.
