January began cold and clear and ended warm and wet. February and March were variable in temperature with fairly low precipitation. April was capricious, with long periods of rainfall and fluctuating temperatures. May began warm and dry but the final third of the month was cool. June was very wet giving problems of disease and a difficult flowering. July continued wet then warmed up with fairly normal summer temperatures continuing into August. Autumn arrived early in September and then incessant rain made final ripening and harvesting extremely problematic. Rain continued into October to the extent of widespread flooding.
As in 1991, damp and cool final ripening conditions made 1992 a vintage for growers to forget as quickly as possible.
Most of the best growers declassified the bulk of their Barolo and Barbaresco. Clerico and Paolo Scavino produced highly-rated Baroli in the context of the vintage. Most wines that were released should, with any luck, by now have been drunk.
