Weather Conditions

The first vintage in which more red grapes were harvested than whites was anything but typical. Veterans describe it as one of the coolest in two decades, and the harvest weather was unusually warm and dry. Picking extended into late October. A sorely-needed warm spell in September allowed sugar levels to perk up. But the warm weather continued until a and mid-October rain. It turned out to be a blessing because it revived the fruit which was looking battered by the warm spell. Cabernet Sauvignon had unusually small clusters and berries which contributed to concentrated flavors and strong tannins.
