White and red Burgundy are classic Christmas wine choices, both as gifts and for the dinner table.

It’s tough to find wines that match exactly with a Christmas dinner, because of the plethora of different foods normally on offer. But, generally speaking, tannin is your enemy in this situation.

So, a medium tannin red  – such as Pinot Noir – is often a good choice. Burgundy reds are, by-and-large, elegant with plenty of autumnal red fruit flavours associated with this time of year.

The whites – all Chardonnay – can vary from lean and crisp Chablis, which is a great match with smoked salmon, to the full and rich Meursault, which is perfect for the main course.
