Cool and complex nose of ripe stone fruit, herbs, guava, nettles and pear. Some attractive grip and distinct skin contact apparent on the palate. A fresh, vibrant and fruity wine with chalky minerality, excellent balance and a long juicy finish. 18.5pts/20

I see that the equal third-placed Simonsig Chenin Avec Chêne is unavailable in the UK. This is a shame. I had some on holiday in North Cyprus (of all places) last year. In an off-license I paid about £13. It really is outstanding.

Really surprised at the selections as they do not represent a benchmark from South Africa. Too many quality leaders are missing.

The Decanter never says how the selections are done. Sometimes it seems they are purely commercial, made by an organization of wine growers... This is why the price of the bottle is a good information (when it is mentioned!); an "extraordinary" wine at £7.19 can be relativized... btw I have drank wonderful South Africa chenins, but I do not remember any name...

Perhaps excluding 1 or 2 of the above tasted wines, i feel this is a very poor reflection of South African Chenin!! What is your selection process in deciding what wines to taste?
