Château Dauzac, Margaux 5CC, 2009

This 40-hectare property has passed through many hands since vines were planted in the 1740s. Today it is owned by the MAIF insurance group, which employed André Lurton to manage the property – surprising as his expertise is considered to be in white-wine production. In 2004 he turned over the management to his daughter Christine. Nobody considers this fifth growth to have particularly exceptional terroir, but it’s a wine that often shines in Decanter blind tastings. The soils are precocious, which can help the ripening in more difficult years. Generously oaked, Dauzac never lacks fruit and is at its best at between five and 12 years of age. 18.75pts/20
