As a vineyard with less than four hectares under vine, Les Petits Monts is rarely encountered. The location, just above Richebourg on the slope, is excellent, though the wines rarely have the heft of its more illustrious neighbour. Louis Latour is a négociant/producer better known for its white wines than its reds, and the winemakers have long adopted a controversial method known as flash pasteurisation towards the conclusion of the alcoholic fermentation. In spite of that, the red wines have improved steadily in recent years, and the panel was unanimous in its enthusiasm for this wine.
Stephen Brook: ‘Ripe, smoky cherry and raspberry nose. Medium-bodied but fresh and limpid; has great purity of fruit, lean and exquisite thanks to fine acidity; has poise and persistence. This is mouthwatering Pinot, with terrific length. Drink.’
Anthony Hanson MW: ‘Open fruit, bright and vibrant; soft, creamy, rich wine, a lovely mouthful – gentle tannins, long finish.’
Jasper Morris MW: ‘Beautiful, pure, clear purple with a brilliant, fragrant, ethereal bouquet. Full and fresh yet fine-boned, predominantly raspberry fruit, many-layered and very persistent. Excellent.’
