It can be easy to forget that there is far more to California than Napa and Sonoma. Antonio Galloni urges wine lovers to look further afield, where the state’s less-famous regions will reward with an exciting diversity of styles, and more affordable prices. See Galloni's top picks from Santa Cruz mountains, Santa Barbara County, the Sonoma Coast and Paso Robles here...

Mount Eden, Estate Pinot Noir 2010
19/20pts (96/100pts)
Mount Eden is another of the historic, reference-point wineries in California. Proprietor Jeffrey Patterson crafts compelling Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from his vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Mount Eden wines are distinguished for their unique personalities and ability to age gracefully for decades. The 2010 Estate Pinot Noir is one of the greatest Californian wines I’ve ever tasted. Dried cherries, plums, exotic spices, mint and crushed flowers all waft from the glass in a wine endowed with superb elegance and class. The Mount Eden Pinots are made with a high percentage of whole clusters and need several years in bottle to harmonise. Patient wine lovers will be treated to one of the most sublime expressions of Pinot Noir anywhere on the planet. The entry-level Domaine Eden range is a great place to start, especially for those on a tight budget.
