Producer Description

Giovanni Abrigo started working with his father Orlando in the late 80s. He now makes very creditable Dolcetto, Barbera and Barbaresco from 11ha of vineyards. There is a relatively limited use of small new oak, primarily for the Barbera d’Alba Mervisano and the two Barolo crus, Vigna Montersino and Vigna Rongallo. Montersino, from 35-year-old vines, is aged only in barrique (one-third new) and starts out structured and oaky but develops well. Rongallo is only part barrique-aged (one-third) while the regular Barbaresco sees only large Slavonian oak but is an elegant, classy example. Barbera d’Alba Vigna Roreto is in a similar mould, eschewing new oak to emphasise only the ripe, intense fruit. Also made are Merlot (Livraie) and a little Chardonnay (Très). In addition to producing his own wines, Giovanni works with his wife Virna, also a trained winemaker, on her family’s 8-ha estate (Virna Borgogno) in the Barolo commune.
