Producer Description

Plenty has been written about Giacomo Bologna, who was one of Piedmont’s great characters as well as innovators. Bricco dell’Uccellone, first made in 1982, is the original oak-aged Barbera of outsized proportions. Bricco della Bigotta can often match it, while Ai Suma, which incorporates late-harvested grapes, can be even richer and more powerful. All should but don’t always improve for a decade and my feeling is they are often best after 6–8 years. There seems to be a real return to form from the late nineties but stick to the top vintages. Il Bacialé adds Pinot Nero to Barbera. Braida is also one of the Hastae six. Working with BERTA, CHIARLO, COPPO, PRUNOTTO and VIETTI, this is an Asti/Alba axis to promote Barbera. A single wine, Quorum, is made by Riccardo Cotarella. Rich, oaky and flattering, it is beginning to show the depth and style of the very best. The serious stuff aside, Barbera La Monella, Brachetto and Moscato are great examples of their effervescent type but the latter two (as ever with these styles) are best within 6 months of the vintage.
