Bruno Giacosa
Producer Information
- Wine region: Piedmont
Producer Description
Bruno Giacosa has made many of the great bottles of Barolo and Barbaresco over the last 40 years. Much of his reputation rests on buying the best grapes from an intimate knowledge of the best vineyards. The renown of Barbaresco crus Asili, Rabajà, Santo Stefano and Barolo crus Vigna Rionda, Falletto and Villero owes much to Giacosa’s supremely complex and harmonious renditions of Nebbiolo. With so many growers now making their own wines, Giacosa has also acquired vineyards of his own – some 15ha includes some of the best sites, namely Asili in Barbaresco and Falletto in Serralunga. Riservas made from both sites are released after 5 years instead of the usual 4. (Riserva bottles have a red label rather than the usual white). Winemaker Dante Scaglione still employs a fairly traditional winemaking practice but the maceration times are now only moderately long and he uses large French oak rather than the once muchfavoured Slavonian casks. These are not wines for drinking young, though they might show well with 6 or 7 years. Keep all the cru Barbaresco and Barolo for a decade from the vintage date – only then will it be possible to see if current releases stack up against some of the legendary older bottlings. The prices they obtain tends to reflect their sought-after status. Barbera, Dolcetto and Roero Arneis are consistently good among several other wines made.
