Producer Description

This is a vast historic estate in the north-east corner of the Brunello di Montalcino zone with 55ha of vineyards. Under new ownership since 2003, led by Massimo Ferragamo (of Ferragamo USA), brother of IL BORRO’s owner Ferruccio, it comes complete with its own ‘village’, castle ruins, hotel, restored luxury villas and Tom Weiskopf designed championship golf course, and is being developed as a private members club. There have been signs of improvement before but it hasn’t been consolidated on. However with a new winery and direction there is at least the potential for a sustained quality revival. Consultant Niccolò d’Afflitto has already stamped his mark on the wines. That means ripe, concentrated, oak-lined Brunello in a very modern style, particularly powerful and full in the single vineyard Campo del Drago. Rosso has lots of modern appeal too but with all wines there doesn’t seem to be sufficient quality from the fruit for the treatment lavished on them. More time is needed to see what can be achieved in the vineyard. New from 2003 is Dainero, a Merlotbased red. Information supplied by Wine Behind the Label
