Chateau Dauzac (Andre Lurton)
Producer Information
- Wine region: Margaux
Producer Description
Details: Margaux, 5ème cru classé, 40ha, gravelly
Vineyards: Cabernet Sauvignon 58%, Merlot Noir 37%, Cabernet Franc 5%
History:
In the far south of the appellation, and like several other Médoc vineyards, Dauzac harbours a celtic flavour. Irish first, since Thomas Michael Lynch in the mid-1700s expanded the single-plot to more or less its modern proportions. Then the Scot Nathanial Johnston, big on wine shipping and cellaring and with interests in Latour and Ducru-Beaucaillou. But just as quality was rising, downy mildew struck. No sooner was that sorted (the famed copper sulphate treatment being first tried out here) than war and recession brought a new downturn. In the 1980s Moroccan buyer Felix Châtelier found the way back - a new cuvier, replanting, renovation of the cellars. In 1988, French insurance group MAIF took over, shrewdly engaging André Lurton as manager four years later.
