History:

In the south-west of the Pauillac appellation, the 60 hectares of Lynch-Moussas are divided between the gravelly soils bordering Châteaux Batailley and Grand Puy Lacoste and those surrounding the small village of Moussas. The remainder lie a little further north near Château Duhart-Milon. The Lynch part of the name comes from founder Thomas Lynch, son of a 17th century Irish trader based in Bordeaux. He not only bought and developed Moussas, but also gave his name to Pauillac's Lynch-Bages and owned Château Dauzac in Margaux. Thomas' tenure was seemingly successful, but by the time Lynch-Moussas was acquired in 1969 by Emile Castéja (owner of neighbouring Château Batailley and powerful negociant firm Borie-Manoux) the estate had been ravaged by phylloxera, recession and war. Extensive replanting and modernisation followed, along with the restoration of the mid-19th century château which today houses Emile's son Philippe - he not only runs the estate but also heads up Borie-Manoux.
