Producer Description

This substantial estate with a fine 17th-century palazzo and 35ha of vineyards is in the favoured south-east corner of the Brunello zone. After making waves with the 1988 and 90 vintages it has continued, first under Roberto Cipresso and now Paolo Vagaggini, to make fine modern-styled Brunello and Rosso. Brunello is ripe and full-textured, with good breadth and depth, relatively approachable when released but generally better with 10 years’ age. A ripe, perfumed Rosso (previously labelled Vigna della Fonte) typically has good richness and depth and with 3–5 years’ age makes a better bet than many a poor Brunello. The estate also has plantings of French varieties. Ateo is from Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and is slightly anonymous and wants for a little more depth while Fabius, which is based on Syrah is intense and very ripe, not classic but with a wild Tuscan quality to it. A new estate, Santo Stefano, has been acquired in the Montecucco DOC and is run by Giuseppe’s son Paolo. Information supplied by Wine Behind the Label
