Producer Description

In establishing her own winery, Donatella Cinelli Colombini has come to symbolise the efforts the Donne del Vino movement for the promotion of women in wine (as well as other spheres through an annual local award), further enhancing what has already been achieved by her mother, Francesca. Her brother Stefano now runs the well-known family estate, Fattoria dei BARBI. Although consultancy comes from Carlo Ferrini the style of Donatella’s wines is determined by an all-female jury and since the first vintages in the mid-90s they have been attractive, modern and fruit-accented. The regular Brunello is barrique-aged while Prime Donne is in a more traditional style and shows greater elegance. While not of the first order these wines show admirable consistency and drinkability with impressive richness. A Riserva has more extract and structure and deserves 10 years’ age. A second estate under the same ownership is Il Colle Trequanda. An expressive Orcia red from Sangiovese and Foglia Tonda, Cenerentola is sourced from here as is new Il Drago e le Sette Colombe which makes reference to Ferrini and the seven ‘doves’ (women). It is a modern style blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Alicante sealed with an innovative closure. Unusually both estates offer hiking routes through the vineyards for visitors.
