Producer Description
Costanti was one of the first recorded producers of Brunello. Andrea Costanti, who has run this estate for two decades, now oversees both the high-altitude 7- ha vineyard area of Colle al Matrichese, east of Montalcino itself, and a further 4ha in the Calbello vineyard at Montosoli, purchased in 1997. He works with Vittorio Fiore to produce elegant but long-lasting Brunello that starts out a little forbidding but shows considerable finesse and style with 10 years’ age or more. There is richer fruit and less austerity than previously but similar ageing capacity in recent vintages. A Riserva is only produced in really exceptional years. Rosso di Montalcino shows both more breadth and refinement than is usual but needs at least five years’ age. From the Calbello property are produced a second very good Rosso di Montalcino and a Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend, Ardingo. The latter shows excellent ripe black fruit and a fine structure and promises to be at its best with 6–10 years’ age. Vermiglio is a partly barrique-aged Sangiovese with the emphasis on the fruit character. Information supplied by Wine Behind the Label
