Producer Description

Claudio Monaci is now making some excellent wines from this small 10ha estate at an altitude of 250m in the very south of the zone. Established in 1990, only now are the vines which are planted in stony, rocky soils starting to show more of their potential. With the 99 and 01 vintages very fine Brunello has been produced. Aged partly in barrique and partly in large oak these are carefully crafted combining concentration and depth with expression and vitality. There is lots of crushed berry and Montalcino herb character and a fine tannic structure that will slowly unfurl with over the next 10 years. Rosso is also a good example with plenty of breadth and intensity. Interesting too is the perfumed Poggio dei Lecci which adds 5% each of Canaiolo and Colorino to Sangiovese - not unlike a good Colli Fiorentini Chianti and atypically good for a lighter style red from the area. Also made are two excellent single variety olive oils, Olivastra and Correggiolo. Information supplied by Wine Behind the Label
