The Esk Valley story began in 1933 when Englishman Robert Bird planted the first vines, and the winery was known as Glenvale. Today, its Black Label range is stong, as this wine shows, with notes of baked apples, star fruit and gingery spice. It has good intensity and a touch of residual sugar. Drink 2008-11. £9.19
