Margaux is even more spread out than Pauillac, covering the five communes of Arsac, Cantenac, Labarde, Margaux and Soussans. Soil varies greatly, as do château characteristics, but the appellation is showing an increasingly even quality, with even the more extracted wine showing elegance, and vice-versa. The Cabernets ripened well so the softer influence of Merlot is less present in 2008 than in 2007, producing wines with fine depth of expression. Steven Spurrier
