Best wine buys at Lidl this summer

Top picks from Lidl's French Wine Tour and core range

Of all the supermarkets, Lidl was the slowest to restart press tastings of its wine range after halting them due to Covid. Finally, it did hold a small summer tasting to show wines from its French Wine Tour line-up, which appeared in stores at the end of July and will be on sale while stocks last. It also took the opportunity to show a few wines from the core range. What follows are the highlights from this latest tasting, followed by wines that were tasted previously and remain available.

Lidl does a good job of sourcing small quantities of interesting and well-priced wines for its revolving Wine Tour selection, which changes every couple of months. Between this and the core range, the supermarket offers a comprehensive selection of Old and New World wines across a range of styles.

French Wine Tour

This summer, there’s a French theme to the Wine Tour, which focuses on classic styles, including many that would be perfect for summer drinking. You’ll be spoiled for choice if you have fish or seafood on the menu – make a beeline for the briskly saline Muscadet (£6.49), the citrussy Picpoul de Pinet from Languedoc-Roussillon (£6.49) or the light, grassy Côtes de Gascogne (£5.99), a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard. For a fuller white with a little residual sugar and bags of character, try the Gewürztraminer from Alsace (£8.99) – a great introduction to the grape. And don’t miss the Côtes du Rhône blanc – a real standout, dry  and with fleshy peach fruit perfumed character (£5.99).

If you’re looking for a light summer red, try the Mâcon rouge (£6.99), a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir with crunchy red fruit character that would be delicious served slightly chilled; or the Juliénas from Beaujolais (£6.99), which would be delicious served with steak and frites. Fuller reds in the French Wine Tour include the grippy Madiran from Domaine du Crampilh (£5.49) and the modern-style, Merlot-dominated red from Château Lary Lacombe in Bordeaux’s Entre deux Mers region (£8.99). Fire up the barbecue and get stuck in!
