Château de Berne: Win a weekend of golfing and wine

The beautiful Château de Berne has been a wine estate since 1750, and is surrounded by 650 hectares of typical Provençal forest and vineyards. One lucky reader and a friend can win three nights at the auberge in the château's grounds, an intimate 19-room hotel that offers a taste of Provence.

Each of the 19 rooms at Château de Berne hotel is individually decorated, many have log fires and all have either a terrace or balcony. Chef Jean-Louis Vosgien serves traditional Provençal food in the hotel restaurant, prepared with the freshest ingredients including organic vegetables, wild herbs and olive oil, all grown in the château’s gardens.

Château de Berne is home to a cooking school, l’Ecole du Cuisine Provençal run by Vosgien, and it also offers tutored wine-tasting courses which include a guided tour of the vineyard in a four-wheel drive.

The auberge has the added appeal of being close to two of Europe’s top golf courses – Barbaroux and St-Endréol, both in the French top 50, with Barbaroux also rated in the European top 100.

The prize is for two people and includes: three nights’ B&B at L’Auberge du Château de Berne; a gastronomic welcome dinner with wine; a wine tasting session at the cookery school; two rounds of golf – one at St-Endréol, the other at Barbaroux; return flights to Nice and a Renault Mégane hire car. To enter, answer the following question:

In which year was Berne established as a wine estate?

Send your answer on a postcard to: Château de Berne Competition, Decanter, Broadway House, 2–6 Fulham Broadway, London SW6 1AA, UK. Please include your golf handicap, postal address and phone number. Entries must be received no later than 25 August 2003. Alternatively, enter online, at www.decanter.com
