Vintage vs Non-vintage Champagne

Non-vintage Champagne accounts for around 79% of the total Champagne production, according to The Comité Champagne. 

Every year producers hold back some reserve wine and blend these to make the non-vintage, creating a consistent and reliable reflection of the house style, though these wines won’t be quite as complex or ageworthy as the vintage ones.

Vintage Champagne is produced in the best years – so not every year – showing more of a unique reflection of the year it was made. The higher quality means it can continue to age in the bottle and further develop. The 2020 vintage is a rare third consecutive year for Champagne vintages – though the ones to look for drinking now are around 2008 – 2012.

Non-vintage Champagne must be aged for a minimum of 15 months (12 on the lees) while vintage must be aged for a minimum of 36 months.

Jack Daniel’s is the top-selling American whiskey in the world, best known for its Old No7 label, along with its iconic square bottles.

The man himself, Jasper Newton ‘Jack’ Daniel, founded his company in Lynchburg, Tennessee in 1875 but as Moore County (in which the Jack Daniel’s distillery is located) is dry, you can’t buy any of the whiskey in local restaurants or shops.

But that hasn’t stopped the huge global success of this brand. While officially a straight bourbon, Jack Daniel’s prefers to use ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ on labels.

Jack Daniel’s uses corn, rye and malted barley in its mash, and distills in copper stills. After a filtering through ground maple charcoal, the whiskey matures in new oak barrels.

Laurent Perrier was founded in 1812 by André Michel Pierlot, former cooper and bottler in Chigny-les-Roses. He bought two plots of vines named ‘Les Plaisances’ and ‘La Tour Glorieux’ from his village Tours-sur-Marne and started his own sparkling wine business.

The Champagne house is conveniently located at the crossroads of the three Champagne growing areas; the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs.

In 1889, the house launched a sugar-free ‘Grand Vin sans Sucre’ to the pleasure of British drinkers. The low-to-zero-dosage style of Champagne was more than a century ahead of its time, when ‘Brut Nature’ became a fashion nowadays.

Created by Sophie Decobecq, who originally worked as a chemist in the cognac industry but was drawn to Mexico due to her love of tequila. Jura is a remote island 60 miles off the West Coast of Scotland to the north of Islay with only about 200 residents, one road, one pub, one distillery and the abundant nature.

The namesake distillery was originally established in 1810 but was closed in 1901. Though once torn down to avoid paying rent, the distillery was revived in 1963 by a joint venture by blender Charles Mackinlay & Co of Leith and two of the island’s landowners.

When first launched, the Game of Thrones whiskies proved to be an instant sell-out success, and the popularity continued with each subsequent range release.

The final one, released in November 2019 was called the ‘Six Kingdoms whisky‘ and was produced by Mortlach. It was the most premium offering to date, aged for 15 years in first-fill, Sherry-seasoned casks and finished in used American oak, ex-Bourbon casks.

New store openings

Majestic, the UK’s largest specialist wine retailer, has just announced the opening of two new branches in Beckenham and Henley.

Both stores will open in November, Beckenham in south London on the 12th November in a converted, grade listed former Chinese garage and Henley-on-Thames following a fortnight later on the 26th November in the newly created Gardiner Place development.

John Colley, CEO said; ‘The team have worked incredibly hard, in really challenging circumstances, to get these open in time for Christmas and we’ve packed them full of some fantastic new wines, beers and spirits to help spread some joy through an unprecedented festive season.’

A new sales day devoted exclusively to deals on wine and dubbed 9/9 is to be held by online retailer Alibaba in China on 9 September, company founder Jack Ma has announced. Reporting by Jane Anson in Bordeaux, and Chris Mercer and Sylvia Wu in London

Jack Ma confirmed speculation in the trade about a new, annual Alibaba wine sales day on 9 September during a public discussion with Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi at the Vinitaly show in Verona today (11 April), according to a report by Italian press agency Ansa.

Ma dubbed the new project as a ‘day of wine’ and appears to have taken inspiration from China’s ‘singles day’, on 11 November, which he was also instrumental in popularising as a shopping event in China, akin to Black Friday in the US.

Last year, China’s singles day sales totalled US$14bn, and it has become one of the most important events in the Chinese retail calendar.

The figure nine is pronounced in Chinese as ‘Jiu’, which means alcohol. ‘Jiu’ also stands for longevity and health in traditional Chinese culture. Ma’s concept is to create a variety of online offers annually on this day around wine sold through Alibaba.

Ma recently bought Château de Sours in Bordeaux and Decanter.com understands from trade sources that he will be working with several partners in the Bordeaux region – including actress Zhao Wei who owns Château Monlot – to supply some of the wines that will be offered on 9/9.

The group of investors owns a number of Bordeaux estates, also including Château Preuillac, Château Haut-Mazeris, Château Puy-Guilhem, Château de Sours and Château Mayne Blanc, with plans to buy more over the next few years.

Decanter.com understands that the group of Chinese investors, including Ma, are to form their own negociant company in Bordeaux.

Online wine sales in China have risen strongly in recent years. Alibaba rival JD.com told DecanterChina.com last month that it expects to triple its online wine sales this year.

At the Vinitaly conference, Ma spoke about the digital economy and its importance to Italian producers. He said that he wanted Alibaba to be the gateway for Italian produce in China, according to Ansa.

Italy’s wine industry has said it wants to reach €7.5bn in exports by 2020, up from €5.4bn today.

Champagne price wars in the run-up to Christmas are fiercer than ever this year – but are also a reality of a market dominated by the major supermarkets, say the wine trade.

In the UK off trade (supermarkets) both Tesco and Sainsbury’s have announced 25% discounts running over Black Friday and Cyber Monday. When buying six bottles, on top of individual brand discounts, meaning that for instance, you can buy six bottles of Piper-Heidsieck from Sainsbury’s for £14.25 a bottle, or less than half-price.

Similarly, Tesco is offering Nicolas Feuillatte Brut NV at £11.25 a bottle when buying six, down from a regular price of £25; while Asda is offering a half-price deal on the same wine, down to £15 from its regular price there of £30. There are deals across many of the Grand Marques which cannot be found at any other time of the year or directly from the merchants who import the wines.

Some Champagne houses choose not to partake; ‘Tesco came calling as they do every year,’ James Simpson, managing director of Pol Roger UK, told Decanter.com at Decanter’s recent Fine Wine Encounter. ‘[With production at approximately one million bottles of the NV, which is small for Champagne] We said: “Awfully sorry, don’t have enough.”

‘As an industry, yes, we’ve got a problem. But there’s a lot of wine that needs selling, and the only place you can sell decent quantities is in supermarkets, who use Champagne as a loss-leader, relatively. You get what you pay for.’

In the on-trade (restaurants) Richard Billett, managing director of Louis Roederer UK distributor Maisons Marques et Domaines, highlighted opportunities, where he said Roederer had seen growth on last year – a trend he expects to continue with by-the-glass sales in the run-up to Christmas. Roederer is another house not as involved in the off trade.

He added: ‘Undeniably, the sparkling wine and Champagne market has become more competitive with the recent rise in popularity of Prosecco and English sparkling, but at the same time the renewed consumer interest in the category as a whole has also benefited the upper-end hierarchy.’

Juliette Alain, sales director at Nicolas Feuillatte, said there was a ‘mixed picture’ in the UK, with demand quite stable, despite some of the ongoing economic and political uncertainties in the European Union, and intensified competition.

‘We try to keep the discounts at an acceptable level, in order to preserve the image of the brand Nicolas Feuillatte, and more generally the image of the Champagne category,’ she added.

‘We prefer to reinforce our marketing investments to stimulate the brand in-store by advertising in retailers’ publications, competitions or direct mailings for loyalty card-holders.’
