Happily for us wine shoppers, the supermarket 25% off wine promotions come along with increasing regularity. It used to be that you’d only see them in advance of national holidays – Easter and Christmas, for instance – but now they seem to be running as often as they’re not running! And 25% is a significant saving, so it makes sense to take advantage and pick out six bottles to enjoy.

You might imagine that a Decanter editor would have no need to buy wine, but in fact I regularly pick up a few bottles while I’m grocery shopping. Not at the Express outlets, where the wine selection is extremely limited and invariably uninspiring – and the prices inflated – but at the larger branches where there’s room to stock more than lowest common denominator wines.

Spoiled for choice

The choice on offer at my local Tesco Extra is impressive – and probably overwhelming to some. So how do I, as the editor of a wine magazine for the last 25 years, whittle down my choice to six wines? How do I bring my expert knowledge to bear?

The last time I took advantage of the promotion was in mid-May. I was specifically looking for whites and / or rosés to enjoy during the warmer weather that I knew was on the way. (And indeed temperatures rose to 35˚C.)

I was looking for everyday-drinking wines, at the lower end price wise, but wines that would offer maximum bang for buck – let’s say at around the £10 to £15-a-bottle mark. You’re not going to find any great complexity at this level, but I wanted to avoid the kind of commodity wines that are typically found on the lower shelves, often with noticeable residual sugar, and lacking in any kind of regional character.

Supermarket wine guides on Decanter.com

The first step – a step that any Tesco shopper can take – was to consult Decanter.com, naturally. Decanter’s in-house tasting team reviews the UK supermarket wine ranges at least twice yearly, and it’s a great shortcut to some interesting bottles, if you’re in a hurry.

Even with my expert knowledge, it’s useful to see the wines that my colleague Natalie Earl picked out for her regular ‘best of Tesco’ round-up. Any wine rated at 89 or 90 points and above would warrant my consideration. You’ll only be able read full tasting notes if you’re a Decanter Premium subscriber (great value at only £99/yr!), but even non-subscribers can see the wine names and scores.

Three of my six purchases were recommended by Natalie in her current selection: the Nepenthe Gruner Veltliner, the 2 banks winery Assyrtiko/Malagousia blend (singled out as her value white of the bunch) and the Finest Viñas del Rey Albariño.

I have tasted the Albariño before and we regularly recommend it on Decanter.com. Tesco’s Finest range is typically a safe bet if you’re looking for well-made and good-value wines, and this particular wine is a consistent performer from vintage to vintage – so a safe choice. Plus a strong 91-point score.

Nepenthe is a well-respected Aussie name, and I liked the idea of trying a cool-climate (Adelaide Hills) New World Gruner. A screwcap closure on this style of wine is another plus point for me, not so much because I fear faults with wines under cork – cork is a far more reliable closure these days than it used to be – but because it helps to keep youthful, aromatic styles of wine vibrant and singing.

Lastly, I adore Greek wine (hence two in my final selection) and so the Assyrtiko/Malagousia blend, again under screwcap, was an easy pick. It’s smartly packaged and the blend of those two grapes can work very well, the Malagousia being all about fruit and aromatics, while Asssyrtiko adds more weight, structure and sometimes minerality.

Sauvignon Blanc decisions

Moving on to the wines I chose beyond Natalie’s recommendations, the first wine I looked for was a New World Sauvignon Blanc. I went through a long phase of never buying or choosing to drink Sauvignon Blanc, but have recently come back to it from time to time, especially in warmer seasons when I’m often not looking for rich and buttery whites. Tesco has some very good Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs at higher price points – the Smith & Sheth Cru, for instance, but I wasn’t looking to spend £20 on a single bottle.

At the value price point, I often turn to cooler-climate Chile over Marlborough. It’s a generalisation, but Marlborough Sauvignons are often more pungent and tropical in style (with the exception of wines from Awatere, maybe), and more inclined to have noticeable residual sugar at lower price points, which is exactly what I don’t want from this crisp and refreshing style. I always avoid Sauvignon Blanc from Chile’s Central Valley, as it’s a warmer region and I’d rather go for a marginal, cooler-climate area. So my attention naturally turns to Aconcagua, in the north of Chile, the centre of cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc.

There’s a good choice at Tesco. Its own Finest Valle de Leyda Sauvignon Blanc is a good buy at £9, and the Luis Felipe Edwards (LFE) Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc (£10) is another well-made pick from Leyda (a sub-region of Aconcagua). In fact Luis Felipe Edwards makes the Tesco Finest wine, so there’s not much to choose between them.

In the end though, I plumped for Errazuriz’s Reserva Estate Sauvignon Blanc, also from Aconcagua. It was on offer when I bought it, and offer prices apply in addition to the 25% off, taking this wine down to around £7.50 – a steal at that price. I visited Errazuriz many years ago, and walked among its cool-climate vineyards. Its president and owner Eduardo Chadwick won Decanter’s Hall of Fame Award back in 2018, and it is a quality-driven operation, at all price levels.

Next I wanted to pick up a bottle of rosé. So what am I looking for in a value rosé? Not necessarily the palest colour – paler doesn’t equal better, and actually I often really enjoy rosés of a deeper hue with exuberant and juicy fruit flavours (like some of the Navarra rosés, for instance).

The Arbousset Tavel rosé (£13) is one of its darkest in the Tesco line-up, and is always a good buy, but I wanted to try something new. So I couldn’t resist picking out the Dianthos rosé, made from one of my all-time favourite grape varieties, Xinomavro. It’s a grape that displays delicious strawberry character and often a hint of tomato in red wines, so I was curious to discover this rosé expression.

Viognier dilemma

So we’re up to five bottles. One left to qualify for the 25% off. I reached for a Paul Mas Viognier from the south of France, as I’ve enjoyed Paul Mas whites in the past – the Grenache Blanc-based whites in particular. But then I spotted next to it a wine I wasn’t familiar with, the Tesco Finest Viognier – £1 cheaper, also French. Which to go for? I stood there for at least five minutes examining the labels, trying to make my mind up.

The Finest wines are usually good, and this one was made by a talented winemaker, Julie Rouffignac (she also makes the Tavel rosé mentioned above). Not much in the price difference, both from the south of France, and both the same alcohol, 13%. It was the Paul Mas that ended up in my trolley, primarily because it is a single-vineyard wine, which usually indicates a level of quality.

Out of curiosity, I later requested a sample of the Finest Viognier from Tesco’s PR company and tasted the two wines side by side. Both are decent wines, but I felt satisfied that I had made the right choice – the Paul Mas was riper and slightly richer, with more of the textural weight that I look for in Viognier.

The final selection

I hope it’s reassuring that even those of us with wine knowledge still take their time in the wine aisles – and that it’s possible to buy six perfectly enjoyable bottles for everyday drinking for just over £50.

Lastly, a note on vintages: in general, when shopping for crisp, fresh whites and rosés at the value end for immediate consumption, I’ll look for the youngest possible vintage. All these wines, with the exception of the Greek white, were from 2025. Sometimes these styles will gain in interest over a couple of years, but these are not wines designed for cellaring and will often lose some of their vibrancy as they age.

Asda has just completed an overhaul of its own-label premium range, now known as ‘Exceptional’.

The company claims the 3.5-year project has been its biggest of the last 10 years, and results in a range of premium wines which has almost doubled in size.

The wine range now delivers wines from many key winemaking areas of the world, and also delves into popular sub-regions such as Argentina's Uco Valley and New Zealand's Awatere Valley.

It's hard to argue with the value for money on offer here, and the Exceptional range guarantees a bit more finesse and regional character; great if you're a wine fan.

At the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards, Asda's Exceptional range alone scooped up 17 medals, with the supermarket bagging 27 in total, including 10 Gold Medals.

Below are some highlights from the range; not all Exceptional in name, but absolutely worth checking out!

And stay tuned, as Asda plans to add more wines to its range in the autumn, including an Argentinian Cabernet Franc and a Grand Cru Champagne.

Curated for gastronomic pleasure

It was sheer joy tasting through Majestic’s spring and summer offerings – an 80-strong range, plus some no- and low-alcohol options – at Vagabond’s new artisan-chic, urban winery-slash-wine bar in Canada Water.

What caught my attention immediately was the breadth of sparkling wines, just in time for the high season of weddings, parties and outdoor gatherings. From light-hearted carbonated fizzes to rich fruity Crémant de Loire – many priced around £15 – through to more sophisticated traditional-method bottles from Italy, South Africa and England, alongside the merchant’s exclusive Champagnes.

There’s also plenty to stock up on among the crisp, scented whites from Vinho Verde, Abruzzo and Chile’s Colchagua Valley, many just under £10. Regional classics from Sancerre, Provence and Marlborough sit at slightly higher price points, offering typicity and distinct flair.

There are plenty of gems in the red range, too: aged claret, richly structured Valpolicella Ripasso, saline, poised Xinomavro and mint-tinged, chocolatey Australian reds – all clearly curated for immediate enjoyment and gastronomic pleasure.

The summer selection at Sainsbury's is well worth investigating this year, with a recent shake-up in the buying team resulting in a much more interesting wine range. The UK’s second-largest supermarket has clearly been keeping an eye on the competition – as well as the latest trends – introducing a raft of exciting firsts.

Following in the footsteps of Aldi and M&S, Sainsbury's has launched an own-label pét-nat (£12) and an own-label orange wine (£11). ‘Our first Taste the Difference orange wine, offering vibrant peach and citrus peel notes with a subtle pithy texture, is a brilliant introduction to the style and a fresh alternative to summer rosé – ideal with olives and sunny day nibbles,’ says Jono Tiffany, who joined the team last autumn as a product development manager.

The latest sparkling selection also includes a new Blanc de Blancs Champagne (£29.50) and a first-ever own-label Discovery Cap Classique (£13). I've recommended it below, but Graham Beck’s Vintner’s Selection Brut is a worthier choice, at £14.50, if you're a fan of this uniquely South African style.

Discover whites you may not know…

The Discovery collection has much more to offer however, and as usual remains a source of good value, unusual and lesser-known grape varieties and styles to explore.

The new white range includes a Gemischter Satz (£10) – ‘A little-known Austrian style I’m excited to champion,’ says Tiffany. ‘Crisp, sherberty citrus and peach meet delicate florals, making this the ultimate summer white – perfect with simple fish or gently spiced dishes.’

Meanwhile product development manager Lauren Ballantyne, another newcomer to the wine team last September, is championing Discovery Custoza (£8.50). ‘A crisp, elegant white from northern Italy, offering bright citrus and white stone fruit with a clean refreshing finish.’

My top picks include the Discovery Marsanne Roussanne, a textured and characterful wine that’s great for food pairing. It’s made for Sainsbury’s by talented Languedoc winemaker Jean-Claude Mas, who has a hand in most of the Sainsbury's own-label southern French wines – look for his name on labels.

Finding value

Several of the Discovery wines I've recommended below come in at around £10 – or less with a Nectar card. But there are bargains to be found right across the Sainsbury's range. One of my great value picks is the fruity Clearsprings Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa (£7).

Or look to Portugal for a fresh Taste the Difference Vinho Verde white (£7.75) and Lisboa red (£8). Both are great for summer parties and barbecues.

Meanwhile from neighbouring Spain, seek out the Taste the Difference Sherries made for Sainsbury's by top producer Bodegas Lustau, which took all three Platinum medals awarded to Sherry in this year's Decanter World Wine Awards. The bone-dry, savoury fino below is perfect as an aperitif or with tapas – and is also among the most competitively priced wines you’ll currently find on the high street.

Summer sips

And of course it wouldn't be summer without a chilled glass of rosé… A highlight of the new selection is the recently launched Queen Côtes de Provence Rosé. Called Cuvée Rock n’ Roll – what else? – it’s produced by Roger Taylor, the drummer of the legendary band, in association with Provence winery Les Caves du Commandeur.

Only available at Sainsbury's and Waitrose, it makes a nice change from Kylie’s Provence Rosé if you like a pink with star power. At the launch Taylor described it as ideal for drinking ‘on the back of a major yacht in hot weather’ – but we think your back garden will do nicely if you don’t have a yacht…

The UK category is always a focus of great interest during our second week of judging – so there was excitement among the Co-Chairs when it became clear that, for the first time, an rosé sparkler was the English wine which had fought its way through to our Best In Show selection. A sign of climate change? Perhaps: red grapes are ever-easier to ripen here. But perhaps its success is also a function of the complex blend crafted by the winemaker – one that includes Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir Précoce (Frühburgunder in Germany) as seasoning for the 61 per cent of Chardonnay, the 23 per cent of Pinot Noir and the 9 per cent of Pinot Meunier. Whatever the reason, we found the wine hard to resist. Its petal pink couldn’t look prettier in the glass, while the aromatic fruits are satisfyingly restrained and subtle, and the palate clean and emphatic. The English-season acidity – always prominent, but satisfyingly ripe here — is lent interest by a mineral-salt undertow as well as a soft sherbet charm. Alcohol 12%

Like I did in the fruit and veg aisle, it’s easy to feel hopeless in the face of climate change. But as conservationist Jake Fiennes says in his book Land Healer (BBC Books, June 2022): ‘We don’t need to throw up our hands in horror and resign ourselves to disaster.’

With a little effort and small changes, we can steer ourselves towards being more sustainably minded.

In recent years, the wine industry has seen tangible growth in knowledge sharing and collective action around the topic of sustainability. Demonstrated through organisations such as International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), The Porto Protocol and Sustainable Wine Roundtable, this includes the sharing of resources, experiences, problems, solutions, research and practical tools through talks, workshops and online platforms.

Wineries can benefit hugely from being members of these groups, as the pooling of resources and expertise accelerates progress. Wineries can be guided through certifications and sustainability strategies by fellow members, or by consultancies such as The Vine Strategy Group (TSVG).

A small change we can make as wine drinkers is to seek out wines made by producers that engage in these collective efforts. Many IWCA wineries will be familiar already: look out for Felton Road from New Zealand, Okanagan Crush Pad from Canada, Rioja’s CVNE, Greece’s Kir-Yianni and Lanson in Champagne.

The path to a sustainable wine industry is not solitary but communal. ‘This is not an area where wineries need to be competing with each other,’ says Rob Symington, director at Symington Family Estates, a founding member of both IWCA and The Porto Protocol. ‘It’s in our mutual interest to share.’

‘Organic always means sustainable’

Unfortunately not always the case. Although organic farming bans the use of most chemicals, it also means tractors might be used more frequently – especially in regions with high humidity – which means more carbon emissions. That being said, organic is still a solid certification to look out for, and as Anne Jones of sustainability consultancy Limestone & Jones says: ‘We have a lot to thank the organic movement for. It has created a consistent global agricultural standard across multiple categories, based on the principles of health, ecology, fairness and care.’ So I continue to use it as a frame of reference when buying wine.

Terroir is often a term used in reference to wine. When a certain grape is grown close to the sea or in mineral-rich soils for example, imbibers are able to taste a hint of salinity or flint in the resulting wine.

In the same way terroir can also be used to describe certain gins. Distillers can source native, wild-grown botanicals to capture the essence of a certain part of the world in their spirits.

Although this has previously been more popular in the UK, now US producers are catching on. using niche ingredients from coast to coast, north to south, to craft gins that are completely distinct to their environment.

In Rhode Island, Rhodium Forager’s Gin uses red clover, sumac, autumn berries and aronia. In California, St George Spirits Terroir Gin relies on Douglas fir, coastal sage, wild fennel and California bay laurel. More broadly reflective of the US is the just-launched Four Corners Gin, made by sourcing indigenous ingredients from across the country. Think wild juniper from Oregon, yerba santa from the Mojave desert, cranberry from Maine and wild cherry bark from Florida.

Going local

‘These locally picked botanicals give terroir gins a unique and distinctive flavour profile, setting them apart from mass produced, traditional gins,’ says Donal O’Gallachoir, co-founder of Four Corners Gin.

O’Gallachoir adds that until recently, most gins in America were made from overseas botanicals, either in part or entirely, but now consumer tastes are more discerning. ‘Gin enthusiasts increasingly love a compelling story that connects the gin to where it’s from. They really appreciate and enjoy the narrative behind the gin, being transported to a place with every sip.’

In general, contemporary consumers are increasingly curious about provenance – tracing a product back to its origins as a confirmation of its authenticity and quality. When it comes to terroir gin, this is especially relevant as the ingredients used in the spirit are often growing together.

Botanical tapestry

‘All of the botanicals work together,’ says Chris Garden, head of operations at Hepple Gin. The Hepple distillery is based within the eastern edge of England’s Northumberland National Park. Garden points out how the stream that feeds the estate’s green juniper plants also feeds the bog myrtle and Douglas fir used in the gin.

‘The influence of climate and geography have an integral role in the flavour of these ingredients,’ adds Adam Hannett, head distiller for The Botanist. Launched in 2011, this Scottish gin brand was a pioneer in terroir gin. ‘We wanted to capture the essence of what it feels like to be on Islay,’ says Hannett. The 22 hand-foraged botanicals include three different types of mint, flowers such as purple heather and earthy botanicals like wild thyme. All are sourced from the hills, meadows and moors of Islay, the southernmost Hebrides island, located off Scotland’s west coast.

Terroir gins tend to feature a handful of key ingredients, some of which you can taste more than others. Geraldine Kavanagh is a forager at Glendalough Distillery in Ireland, which produces Wild Botanical Gin. She notes that even botanicals used in lesser quantities are just as significant to the final liquid.

‘They affect the way the gin tastes and feels in your mouth, in the same way as herbs, salt and pepper are small but hugely important additions to a recipe when you are cooking at home,’ she explains. The 30 fresh, foraged botanicals used to make Wild Botanical Gin, include yarrow and sweet woodruff. Both are used in small quantities, but Kavanagh says the gin wouldn’t be as balanced without them.

Seasonal style

In addition to relaying a specific sense of place, gins produced from wild-grown botanicals reflect profound seasonality and freshness. Lantic Gin’s founder Alex Palmer-Samborne (below) picks botanicals and distils them within 24 hours. ‘Similar to cooking,’ he says, ‘you get a lot more of the true flavour from fresh produce.’

Lantic’s gin portfolio aims to capture the different seasons. Lantic Summer Foraged Gin and Morva are inspired by summer meadows, sourcing from wide-open spaces in bloom, using the likes of elderflower, wild strawberries, red clover, and honeysuckle. Lantic Winter Foraged Gin is designed for the colder and darker months, tapping into autumnal fruits and berries that are distilled and aged in an oak cask for warming notes.

‘Using plants that grow locally and distilling them daily allows us to capture the changing flavours of an entire year,’ agrees Glendalough’s Kavanagh. ‘I like that you have to wait and that there is a sense of excitement with the coming of each botanical. We have lost this in the modern world where everything is available all year round, but things don’t necessarily taste as good.’

Kavanagh explains that during August in the Wicklow Mountains, she’s smelling herbal and honey notes in the air from heather in bloom. In April, it’s pine and tropical coconut notes from the new shoots of the pine trees and gorse in bloom. ‘In order to capture that terroir in a bottle, the botanicals have to be of excellent quality. The flowers have to be picked on a dry day when they have pollen; the leaves need to be fresh and green and at their prime in terms of flavour; fruit has to be perfectly ripe.’

Freshness is also a result of limited production and using small batch stills. ‘It is the attention to detail in the production process that makes these gins so good,’ shares O’Gallachoir. ‘Each [ingredient] needs to be treated differently and macerated slowly to tease out their unique flavours,’ he says. At Four Corners, the team uses a 1,500-litre pot still with a shallow swan’s neck to deliver low reflux, which results in capture of more congeners and oils for a rich and textural profile.

Environmental benefits

It’s also interesting to consider the environmental role of foraged botanicals. In some instances their use is helping to scale down issues they might previously have contributed to their natural habitats. In Providence, Cathy Plourde, co-owner of Rhode Island Spirits, who distils Rhodium Forager’s Gin, sources botanicals in great quantities that are considered invasive species such as autumn berry, weeds like clover or sumac, or even a nuisance, like black walnuts.

Lance Winters, Master Distiller for St George’s Terroir Gin gathers Douglas fir from a ranch near Ukiah in California, which is home to a forest of old-growth redwoods. According to Winters, clearing out the Douglas fir helps to reduce fuel load for forest fires.

As the popularity of terroir products continues to trend, it’s opening a new world of how gin can and should taste. ‘The myth that all gin tastes like a Christmas tree is eroding, as people realise that craft gin strives to bring unique flavours that use specific, local ingredients,’ says Plourde.

Four Corners American Gin

Crafted exclusively with all American botanicals, the nose is balanced with hints of floral and slight juniper. The palate is clean and smooth with notable wood spices, tropical citrus and a hint of vanilla bean. A Gin & Tonic garnished with grapefruit accentuates the floral and citrus notes. Alcohol 41%

Glendalough Wild Botanical Gin

Juniper and pine blend with elderflower and wet earth for a silky and harmonious palate. Glendalough works with a local forager who cuts every ingredient according to freshness, informed by smell and taste. A delightful addition to a White Negroni. Alc 41%

Hepple Gin

Hepple Spirits recommends serving its bold gin with a splash of tonic and wedge of lemon – it’s obvious why. Their garnish of choice coerces the bright citrus in harmony with the green juniper, savoury bog myrtle and elegant peppered finish. Alc 45%

Savour the fleeting season along the Cornish coastline year round with this fresh and floral gin that infuses 21 botanicals, including elderflower, honeysuckle and Malwina strawberry. Procera Blue Dot Gin

Seventy kilometres from Procera’s Nairobi distillery grows the eponymous African juniper that Procera was the first to use in a gin. This combined with indigenous ingredients from throughout Africa – Moroccan orris root, Swahili lime – presents a bright palate meshed with savoury qualities of dried earth and an expertly smooth finish. There’s no better way to enjoy it than an ice cold Martini. Alc 44%

Rhodium Forager’s Gin

Cathy Plourde and her partner Kara Larson combined their love of foraging and passion for home brewing, respectively, to create a gin unique to Rhode Island. The nose offers dried mint and wormwood that’s furthered on the palate with wet earth, slight anise and a minty finish. Try it neat as a digestif. Alc 42%

St George Spirits Terroir Gin

Meant to evoke ‘a walk in the forest’, fresh pine consumes the aromas but isn’t overwhelming on the palate. The finish is herbal with lingering sage notes. Enjoy in a classic Martini swapping a lemon twist for two drops of orange bitters. Alc 45% 

The Botanist Gin

As an early adopter of terroir-driven gin, The Botanist still sets the bar high with 22 of 31 botanicals sourced from the distillery’s native Islay. It is easy to see why online retailers now account for more than £1 in every £4 spent on goods in the UK. Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that the ecommerce channel has enjoyed exponential growth over the past decade, increasing its market share from 9.5% in July 2013 to 26.1% in July 2023.

The UK is now the world leader for online shopping, ahead of Germany (19.6% share), the Netherlands (19.2%), the USA (18.8%) and Sweden (16.7%), according to the Centre for Retail Research. It had been steadily growing for years, but the Covid-19 pandemic rapidly accelerated the trend towards online shopping.

However, it can be tricky to navigate the complex world of online wine retail, so read on for some tips on how to simplify the process.

Buy wine from a trusted retailer

It is important to only use reputable online retailers that can be trusted to process your order correctly and send the bottles promptly. Ensure that they use the correct packaging to protect the wine during transit, and ideally, make sure they take steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

‘Buying online might be the most empowering channel, but it still needs savviness,’ says wine writer Richard Hemming MW, who previously worked in retail at Majestic.

‘Some of the most visible ecommerce wine sites are brokers, who don’t necessarily hold stock and may therefore have a long fulfilment time, while others are based abroad, which can cause unexpected headaches with shipping and customs payments.’

You can circumvent those issues if you buy wines at an established, high-quality ecommerce site based in the UK. The Wine Society stands out as an elite online wine retailer, which is favoured by many within the trade. Naked Wines is another popular choice.

Smaller operators like House of Townend and Perfect Cellar also offer a very impressive service, which powered them to success in the Decanter Retail Awards.

‘Much like buying wine from an independent store, the hard work is choosing where to buy online,’ says Charlie Brown, a wine writer who previously worked as a sommelier and owned an award-winning wine store in Essex

‘Big websites with thousands of wines might look appealing with their quick delivery and plenty of options. But it can be overwhelming and difficult to pick out the good from the bad. My advice is to find small-medium sized online retailers that have already done some serious bottle curation.’

Review the delivery fees, speeds and returns policies

Transporting wine can be expensive, as it is heavy and it requires special packaging to prevent breakage. Some retailers will absorb those costs if you spend a certain amount, so it can be advantageous to buy in bulk when shopping online.

Check delivery times too, as it can be frustrating to wait for days on end to receive the wine, especially if it is needed for a specific occasion. Ensure the retailer covers your location, and that the bottles will arrive at your door in a timely and reliable fashion. Some sites even provide same-day or next-day delivery, which is helpful.

The best online retailers also have hassle-free return policies, allowing you to return products you are not satisfied with. One disadvantage of shopping online is that you cannot inspect the bottles you are considering, so you cannot scrutinise the packaging for damage or check for issues with the liquid. The leading online retailers make it easy for you to get a refund, which gives you confidence when making online purchases.

Set your parameters

It is useful to figure out in advance how much wine you would like, the style you are interested in and when it will be consumed.

‘Know your parameters,’ says Brown. ‘How many bottles do you want to buy? What’s the ratio of white to red? What’s the wine for? If you go in blind, you could easily overbuy wines you don’t really want or need.’

‘Many people want to impress at a dinner party or purchase wine as a gift,’ adds Ruth Yates, founder of award-winning wine merchant Corks Out. ‘Therefore, knowing what your dinner guests enjoy or finding out what the person enjoys drinking if buying for a gift can make the buying experience a lot easier.’

Take advantage of filters and search tools

‘Buying online might not have the same charm as browsing in a dusty old merchant, or the convenience of supermarkets, but it has technical advantages instead,’ says Hemming.

‘Almost all ecommerce sites allow you to sort products by price, special offer, popularity or rating, which is a great way to discover something unexpected. Of course, if you already know what you want, search functions will return results according to grape variety, origin, vintage – even oak usage and food match. The Wine Society is particularly good at this.’

Brown adds: ‘When you filter, filter heavily. Reduce your options for each bottle as much as possible to make it easier for you to execute my next piece of advice: do some extra research.’

Conduct independent research

The product descriptions and customer reviews displayed on the site can help you gauge feedback from fellow shoppers.

However, it is also helpful to conduct independent research, rather than simply relying on the reviews displayed by the retailer.

‘Most online wine shops will include information about each wine, although the quality of this is variable – and is often ripped from other online sources,’ says Hemming. ‘Another risk, especially when buying older vintages or expensive bottles, is that you don’t know whether you can trust the bottle shot.’

Brown adds: ‘Many online retailers won’t tell you much about the wine, so give it a quick Google. The best winemakers like to shout about their wines so someone somewhere will have written about it, be it a blogger or the winemaker themselves.’

However, make sure you are comparing the same wine and not a different vintage or producer, which can have a significant impact upon the price. Also factor in delivery costs and the general reputation of the retailer.

Online shopping offers a seamless and efficient way for you to browse a huge range of wines, compare prices and make informed purchases.

The best online retailers work hard to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible, which has helped them significantly increase their share of the market.

However, they naturally need to add a markup, which helps them pay their overheads and earn a profit. As such, in certain circumstances, you may find it more cost-effective to go straight to the source and buy directly from the producer’s website.

That is not really feasible if you want to buy Pinot Noir from a boutique producer in Central Otago, but it can be a sensible approach when buying English sparkling wine, for instance.

It can also give you access to exclusive wines, and you may receive discounts if you join a producer’s wine club. You can be fully confident in the wine’s authenticity and provenance too, so occasionally buying direct from a producer can neatly complement purchases made at reputable ecommerce sites.

Any discussion of the relative merits of Cognac and Armagnac can all too easily descend into trite generalisations. Cognac is invariably described as ‘refined’ and ‘elegant’, Armagnac as ‘rustic’ and ‘earthy’. Luckily for us, the truth is altogether less reductive, and more interesting to explore.

There are obvious contrasts between these two great French spirits that transcend mere geography, encompassing history, culture, terroir, grape variety, distillation and maturation. But there are commonalities too and, within each region, subtle contrasts and nuances that defy lazy preconceptions.

Let’s start with the land. Cognac’s vineyards span a vast area from La Rochelle south almost to Bordeaux, and from the Atlantic east beyond Angoulême. Meanwhile Armagnac’s vines are more scattered throughout a varied rural Gascon landscape.

In both cases, the most celebrated zones have a distinctive character. Cognac’s Grande Champagne enclave is famed for its deep, crumbly chalk soils; while Bas-Armagnac combines sables fauves (tawny sands) and boulbènes – a mix of silt and sand. Two highly contrasting terroirs, but both equally capable of producing ageworthy brandies with great structure, concentration and elegance.

Another obvious difference lies in grape varieties. Cognac is dominated by Ugni Blanc (Italy’s Trebbiano), which covers about 98% of its 78,000ha of vines. Armagnac, however, offers a diverse mix of the hybrid grape Baco with not only Ugni Blanc, but also the delicate but fragile Folle Blanche, and Colombard.

Distillation and maturation

Then there’s distillation. Cognac is made using a small-batch, double distillation process in a Charentais copper pot still, with only the heart of the distillate taken for ageing, resulting in a relatively clean eau-de-vie coming off the still at about 70-72% abv. Most Armagnacs, though, are made via a single, continuous distillation in a distinctive column still – making for a more characterful spirit typically at about 55% abv when filled into cask.

While Cognac is matured in oak barrels sourced from the Tronçais and Limousin forests, Armagnacs often use wider-grained Gascon oak, especially early in their ageing process. This means more flavour contribution – often in the form of spice – from the wood.

So far, so straightforward. The contrasts between Cognac and Armagnac could hardly be more evident. The problem is that the truth – the whole truth, anyway – is nothing like as simple.

A varied taste of terroir

Sure, a fine-boned Grande Champagne is probably the classic expression of Cognac, but Grande Champagne is only one small part of a vast and sprawling region. Petite Champagne’s chalk is subtly different, while the tiny Borderies cru showcases an enticing, aromatic fruity character (Camus and Martell are big fans).

Fins Bois offers heterogenous clay/limestone soils and supple, immediate charm – but there’s chalk here too. Move further out to the coastal Bois à Terroirs cru and you’ll find light, saline Cognacs from spots such as the Île de Ré.

Armagnac’s terroir is, if anything, even more diverse. The uncompromising power of a Bas-Armagnac Baco may be its most distinctive incarnation, but move east into the Ténarèze area and you can find Ugni Blanc growing on chalk, as well as boulbène soils with more obvious echoes of Bas-Armagnac itself.

Adding complexity

While it’s true to say that most Armagnac is distilled once, double-distillation is also used here. This was the original method of Armagnac production, and was revived in the region in the early 1970s when local producer Janneau was owned by Martell. Good examples of double-distilled Armagnacs today come from the likes of Janneau and Samalens.

Double-distillation in Cognac is universal, but here too different flavour profiles and characters are created, depending on how the stills are manipulated. Does the producer distil on the lees? This is more painstaking, but it can make a big difference to the complexity and texture of the spirit.

Ugni Blanc may be dominant in Cognac, but it doesn’t constitute a monoculture. You’ll still find pockets of Folle Blanche, Colombard and Folignan – a relatively new cross of Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche. Single varietal Colombard Cognacs, with a supple, vinous fruit character, are worth seeking out for curiosity value alone – Camus sourced an interesting example from Cognac’s southwestern fringes at St-Aulaye, near Bergerac, a few years back. Meanwhile WV Baker’s Rare Pale expression (see below) is about as idiosyncratic as Cognac gets.

The human factor

For every apparent rule in Cognac and Armagnac, there’s an exception. This helps foster diversity and makes both regions endlessly fascinating to explore. There’s also one more aspect that is central to shaping this ever-changing landscape: the human hand.

From the way the vineyards are farmed to the decisions around winemaking and distillation. From the selection of casks to the choice of cellaring conditions (warm? cool? humid? dry?) and pinpointing the precise best moment for bottling. People are the most vital element in the creation of the expressions we love.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the process of blending, the alchemical, art-meets-science process that lies behind the vast majority of Cognacs and Armagnacs on the market today. Each bottle bears not only the hallmark of the vineyard, distillery and cellar in which it was created, it also carries the signatures of the people – vigneron, distiller, chef de caves – who helped to bring it to life.

Laballe Bas-Armagnac 12 Year Old Rich

The famille Laudet has been growing grapes on Bas-Armagnac’s fabled sables fauves for more than 200 years. This is a wonderfully poised combination of punchy grip and perfumed elegance, with a finish of caramel and sweet fruit. A great all-rounder. Alc 44.2%

Martell l’Or Zodiac, l’Assemblage du Lapin

The second release in Martell’s Zodiac series. Cellar Master Christophe Valtaud created this astonishing blend from 700 eaux-de-vie, with an emphasis on rare old Cognacs from previous Years of the Rabbit. Jasmine and chamomile meld into dried tropical fruits and fig – all slathered in rich honey. Alc 41%

Frapin 1990 30 Year Old

A voluptuous Cognac aged in humid cellars for a rounded, broad character. Dried apricot and brighter tangerine notes are accompanied by a dusting of nutmeg and scents of unlit cigar. The elusive savoury scent of long age – rancio – permeates the long finish. Alc 41.8%

Jean-Luc Pasquet L’Organic 07

Pasquet’s vineyards have been organically farmed since 1995, and this relatively youthful Cognac offers plenty of lively citrus fruit, a creamy texture and a touch of cola cube. Tension and acidity make this perfect in a refreshing Sidecar cocktail. Alc 40%

While different wine styles and market shares seem to have waxed and waned over the last few tumultuous years, no wine save sparkling has shown the resilience of rosé. From New York State to California, there are pink wines for every palate. While often cast as ‘porch pounders’, the level of rosé’s sophistication has risen over the last few years to make it well-suited for more refined meals and summer barbecues and, in a few cases, even worthy of ageing.

A decade in pink

Rosé has had quite the decade. A global trend, not merely confined to Provence or the Instagram-savvy influencers of Brooklyn or Portland, Oregon, rosé has ruled and for quite some time. The high watermark for rosé tends to be seasonal, with sales increasing in the warmer months, and as a planet, we’re nothing if not warmer. Celebrities have launched their own rosé brands, from John Bon Jovi to Sarah Jessica Parker, and perhaps most famously, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Miraval brand.

Pink wines have never been cooler, particularly as temperatures rise, and their market share and production growth have both been astronomical. No one makes or sells more rosé than the French of course. In a report from beverage industry data company Provi, the presence of Provence rosé in the US market increased by 7,100% (that is not a typo) from 2001 to 2016.

The sales of rosé have bucked all the wine trends in both still and sparkling categories. While younger generations may be turned off by some wines and are choosing alcoholic seltzer, they have not turned their backs on rosé. According to Provi, three of the top five wine growth categories are comprised of rosé.

Myriad styles

Stylistically, Americans have settled on dry rosé in the style of the wines of Provence after a long love affair with the sickly sweet White Zinfandel. However, style can vary within that range. Depending on how the wines are produced, they can appeal to a variety of drinkers. How a particular rosé is made will affect the texture, colour and the finished wine.

The three main methods of producing rosé wine are to make it via direct press, saignée, and – in a few cases – blending of red and white wines.

When rosé is made in the direct press method, red grapes are picked and crushed. The grape skins remain in contact with the juice until the desired level of colour is achieved. The grapes are typically harvested specifically to make rosé when made in this way.

The saignée method is a type of short maceration and the wine is actually a bi-product of red wine production. This involves bleeding a portion of pink-coloured juice out of a tank destined to make red wine. The juice has not been in contact with the grape skins for very long. It is typically very lightly coloured, depending on the grape variety and the desired hue of the finished rosé. In many cases, the remaining wine will go on to be made into red wine, though not necessarily always.

Sometimes rosés may use a small amount of red wine blended into a white wine. This approach is seen as non-traditional and more of a shortcut than a winemaking technique. Note that this method is not allowed in the majority of EU appellations (rosé Champagne is an important exception).

Opened in 2020, World of Wine – known as WOW – has become a must-visit attraction for tourists in Porto, the city at the heart of Portugal’s Douro wine region. The new cultural district transformed Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro river, an area previously occupied by Port lodges.

The idea was conceived by The Fladgate Partnership as early as 1986, when regulations around the export of the Douro’s fortified Port wines changed. Previously all Port had to be shipped from Vila Nova de Gaia. This meant that large Port companies such as Fladgate – which encompasses the labels Taylor’s, Fonseca, Croft and Krohn – owned substantial warehouses in the historic district.

Transformation begins

When it was no longer necessary to operate those Port lodges, there was an opportunity for redevelopment. The transformation began in 2010 with the opening of The Yeatman, a luxury hotel for wine tourists.

‘Porto has this incredible history. It’s got amazing architecture. It’s got wonderful people, and it’s got lovely traditions of food. It’s obviously got a wine tradition – it’s one of the few places in the world that has a wine named after it. And yet, it never really had a hotel to do it justice. And that was what The Yeatman was about,’ explains Adrian Bridge, CEO of The Fladgate Partnership since 2000.

But a hotel was just the beginning. ‘The latest reorganisation is to move the company out of the historic centre of Porto over the course of decades – that project started about 2010 – so that we can convert that city centre to content that enriches the entire tourist offer of the city, and northern Portugal and Portugal itself,’ says Bridge, explaining the ethos behind WOW.

Cultural district

More than just a wine museum, WOW is an entire cultural district. Covering 55,000m2 of regenerated Port lodges, the project cost €105m. The site has space for temporary art exhibitions and runs a vibrant selection of cultural and music events throughout the year. It’s worth checking the events schedule to see what’s on during your visit.

Star attraction is The Wine Experience (see below). But the complex also includes interactive attractions Planet Cork and the Pink Palace, exploring rosé wines around the world, and The Bridge Collection of drinking vessels from antiquity to the modern day.

Keen to turn your love of wine into qualifications? There’s also a WSET accredited wine school onsite, where you can study Level 1 in a day-course (€45), or Levels 2 and 3 on residential courses. Other options include a Portuguese Specialist course and a selection of shorter sessions on Demystifying Wine (€35).

Elsewhere The Chocolate Story attraction explores the fascinating history of chocolate production and includes a working chocolate factory – with tasting samples, while Porto Region Across the Ages is a local history museum that uncovers the unique heritage of the city and its people.

Tickets can be purchased individually for each museum, or you have the option to visit two museums (€34 for adults, €15 children), three (€45 for adults, €18 children) or five (€65 for adults, €27 children). Two-museum tickets are valid for a month, three- or five- for three months. Football fans can add in a tour of FC Porto to the two-museum ticket for an additional €5 per person.

The site also boasts nine restaurants and bars. These include 1828 steakhouse, where young, fruity vintage Ports can be paired steak. Meanwhile the Golden Catch fish and seafood restaurant offers dishes such as octopus carpaccio, sole with truffled mash and decadent seafood platters.

The Wine Experience

The first stop at WOW for any wine lover has to be The Wine Experience. Making clever use of AV technology, this highly interactive, immersive exhibition is fun whatever your level of wine knowledge. Individual tickets cost €13 for adults and €5.40 for children, or €45 for a family ticket (two adults and two children).

Displays and activities explore how wine is created from vineyard to glass. Discover which wine style is right for you, test your knowledge of wine regions and sniff out the different aromas in wine. You can even take a tour of Portugal’s main wine regions, visiting a typical house from each area. Tours include a tasting of red, white and Port wines, with expert guidance on how to taste and evaluate wines.

Pink Palace

Delightfully kitsch, the Pink Palace is perfect for your Instagram-worthy holiday snaps. Dive into the bright pink ball pool, pose in a vintage Cadillac (pink of course) or pop yourself out of a sparkling rosé bottle. But there’s also plenty to learn at this shrine to rosé wine.

Vintage vs Non-vintage Champagne

Non-vintage Champagne accounts for around 79% of the total Champagne production, according to The Comité Champagne. 

Every year producers hold back some reserve wine and blend these to make the non-vintage, creating a consistent and reliable reflection of the house style, though these wines won’t be quite as complex or ageworthy as the vintage ones.

Vintage Champagne is produced in the best years – so not every year – showing more of a unique reflection of the year it was made. The higher quality means it can continue to age in the bottle and further develop. The 2020 vintage is a rare third consecutive year for Champagne vintages – though the ones to look for drinking now are around 2008 – 2012.

Non-vintage Champagne must be aged for a minimum of 15 months (12 on the lees) while vintage must be aged for a minimum of 36 months.

Whether you want to sip it, shoot it, mix with tonic or shake up a sophisticated cocktail, vodka is a versatile spirit that belongs in everyone’s drinks cupboard.

That versatility is due to its pure, neutral taste, which is achieved through the distillation process itself and then further filtration, which removes any impurities left behind by the distilling process and brightens the clarity of the spirit.

Vodkas can be distilled, once, twice, three or four times – or even more – in search of that perfect purity. The filtration process adds polish and can impart flavour characteristics to a vodka; though not all producers choose to filter.

The quest for purity led to the development of premium vodkas, which started appearing on the market in the 1990s. Grey Goose led the way, but many other brands followed, with producers creating increasingly expensive super-premium and ultra-premium expressions.

Travel is off the agenda for most people right now, but 1 January 2021 still marked the beginning of new duty-free rules for the UK following Brexit.

That said, Northern Ireland continues to apply EU customs policies at ports.

You can enter Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland) with a ‘personal allowance’ of up to 18 litres of still wine without paying duty or tax, according to the UK government. That’s equivalent to 24 bottles.

You can also bring in 42 litres of beer. Plus, in a third category, you can have either:

• Four litres of spirits and other liquors above 22% abv.
• Nine litres of sparkling wine (12 bottles), fortified wine and alcoholic drinks up to 22% abv.

You don’t necessarily have to choose between your love of Port or Cognac. The government says you can split the allowances in this third category, such as by using 50% each of your spirits and fortified wine limits.

The new limits above apply to all international travel to Great Britain, and the government said its new scheme has ‘one of the most generous allowances anywhere in the world’. See the rules here.

What now for the cross-Channel booze cruise?

There was previously no official limit to bringing wine into the UK from another EU state. Buyers could take advantage of lower wine prices in France and no additional UK duty or tax was charged at the border, as long as the bottles were for private consumption.

Anyone arriving with more than 90 litres (120 bottles) crammed into their car boot might face questions, according to a UK parliamentary paper published last year.

This policy stemmed from the birth of the EU single market in 1993, and day-trippers to France have at various times piled the cases high for weddings and parties back home.

Things will change for the booze cruise, yet it’s early days. ‘I think there’s still life left in it,’ said Guy Boursot, founder of Boursot Vins in Ardres not far from Calais.

‘It has changed focus many times, and now it will be something else.’ It’s a good day out for one thing, he said, adding that it was never just about price. ‘Most of our wines are unique to us and not found in the UK.’

Boursot, who has a lot of experience in the trade and worked for 17 years at Berry Bros & Rudd, also said he was looking at ways to adapt his business.

However, he expressed frustration at a lack of information and clarity from authorities, particularly regarding post-Brexit rules and paperwork for delivery orders from UK-based customers.

When sending wines for delivery, ‘we are being asked for new forms every day’, he said.

Duty-free shopping

Another new development is that duty-free shopping is again available for people going from Great Britain to the EU.

You can enter the EU with up to four litres of still wine without needing to pay duty or tax, as long as you don’t plan to sell the bottles, say the rules.

On top of that you could have one litre of spirits (above 22% abv) or two litres of fortified or sparkling wines. Once again, you can split this last category.

This may lead to new deals for travellers at UK airports, train stations or aboard ferries.

The return of duty-free shopping when departing Britain for the EU offers some opportunities, said Julie Lassaigne, secretary general of the European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC).

In particular, she told Decanter that it might provide scope for offers on premium drinks, or releases that are exclusive to the travel retail sector.

However, she also warned that retailers faced ‘a lot of additional complexity’ to comply with Brexit trade rules. And fewer travellers due to Covid-19 have also made it a challenging period for the travel retail sector in general.

Price inflation has become a major talking-point in the world of whisky in recent years, with some aged expressions of single malt Scotch rapidly rising in price thanks to the dynamics of supply and demand.

Meanwhile, in Japan, many expressions have been withdrawn altogether as stocks run dry – leaving the remaining bottles on the market too expensive for all but a few.

But these headlines can disguise the fact that, in a crowded and competitive marketplace, there’s still a huge amount of good value to be found: from underrated blends, entry-level single malts and NAS (no age statement) products.

This is particularly true if you’re brave enough to venture off the beaten track and take a punt on some of the less famous names out there. Some of these may be little-known outside whisky circles, but each has its own unique style and flavour profile.

Ardbeg 10 Year Old

It’s easy to forget that the self-characterised ‘Beast of Islay’ has a gentle side. The key to Ardbeg’s appeal is not just that famously feral peatiness, but also the distillate’s perfumed fruit character – never so obvious as it is here in the Islay distillery’s flagship product. Yes, there’s camphor, coal tar and smoke, but also a gently creamy seamlessness underpinning everything. Alc 46%

Aultmore 12 Year Old

Aultmore is one of those wonderful, lesser-known Speyside gems that is well worth seeking out. There’s nothing obvious here – an elegant, fragrant, extremely subtle malt that combines green apple and pear with a creamy, lemon meringue citrus character and some beautiful floral highlights. Compass Box Great King Street Artist’s Blend

This modern blend aims to recapture the character of the great 19th-century pioneers of the art of blending, with a malt-heavy mix that majors on waxy Clynelish. It’s wonderfully fruity – tangerine and candied strawberry strengthening into more mature, dried fruits – with great weight and spice from some well-chosen casks. Great for mixing. Alc 43%

Glenturret Triple Wood 2020 Maiden Release

Glenturret in Crieff has undergone a rebirth under new owner Lalique, with ex-Macallan master distiller Bob Dalgarno taking charge of the liquid. This is a highlight of the new range, offering sweet plums, cherries and ginger alongside a peppery floral element, from maturation in American and European ex-Sherry casks, and ex-Bourbon oak. Alc 43%

Inchgower 14 Year Old Flora & Fauna

Diageo’s Flora & Fauna range is a great way to get to know some lesser-known malts, such as this rare Inchgower – a chameleon-like whisky that fluctuates between spice and salt, sweetness and bitterness, green and dark fruits, with a flinty edge and a dry nuttiness on the finish. Jameson Black Barrel

One of the secrets to Jameson’s huge global success has been the endless array of spin-offs – riffs on the core Jameson style like this, a pot still-heavy whiskey that uses lots of influential ex-bourbon and Sherry casks. You get the sweet, honeyed cereal flavour of Jameson, but with extra plummy fruits and plenty of tannic depth from the oak. Alc 40%

The Norfolk Parched Single Grain

Norfolk’s take on the Irish pot still style, with brewer-turned-distiller David Fitt using a mix of malted and unmalted barley. The unmalted component is relatively small here, bringing bags of sweet fruit, vanilla and popcorn alongside tangy fruit, light spice and peanut brittle. One of an excellent trio of grain whiskies from The English Whisky Co. Alc 45%

Wild Turkey 101

A gorgeous rye-heavy Bourbon bottled at a higher than regular strength and showing all the punch that you’d expect: spice, black banana, sawmill scents and coconut, but underscored by a refined note of wax furniture polish and darker, dried fruit. There’s also a lighter touch of cereal and Sugar Puffs. Certainly not shy. Alc 50.5%

Jack Daniel’s is the top-selling American whiskey in the world, best known for its Old No7 label, along with its iconic square bottles.

The man himself, Jasper Newton ‘Jack’ Daniel, founded his company in Lynchburg, Tennessee in 1875 but as Moore County (in which the Jack Daniel’s distillery is located) is dry, you can’t buy any of the whiskey in local restaurants or shops.

But that hasn’t stopped the huge global success of this brand. While officially a straight bourbon, Jack Daniel’s prefers to use ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ on labels.

Jack Daniel’s uses corn, rye and malted barley in its mash, and distills in copper stills. After a filtering through ground maple charcoal, the whiskey matures in new oak barrels.

Cyber Monday Jack Daniel’s whiskey deals

The most famous bottle in the ever-increasing Jack Daniel’s range – and the original – is Old No7, aka Black Label. Laurent Perrier was founded in 1812 by André Michel Pierlot, former cooper and bottler in Chigny-les-Roses. He bought two plots of vines named ‘Les Plaisances’ and ‘La Tour Glorieux’ from his village Tours-sur-Marne and started his own sparkling wine business.

The Champagne house is conveniently located at the crossroads of the three Champagne growing areas; the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs.

The house was passed on to his son and then former cellar master Eugène Laurent. It was Laurent’s widow Mathilde Emilie Perrier who combined the two family names and renamed the Champagne house as ‘Veuve (“widow”) Laurent-Perrier’.

Lauren-Perrier is one of the pioneers to produce drier-style Champagne, even at the time when sweetness was more appreciated in the traditional fizz. In 1889, the house launched a sugar-free ‘Grand Vin sans Sucre’ to the pleasure of British drinkers. The low-to-zero-dosage style of Champagne was more than a century ahead of its time, when ‘Brut Nature’ became a fashion nowadays.

Calle 23 Anejo Tequila

Created by Sophie Decobecq, who originally worked as a chemist in the cognac industry but was drawn to Mexico due to her love of tequila. Jura is a remote island 60 miles off the West Coast of Scotland to the north of Islay with only about 200 residents, one road, one pub, one distillery and the abundant nature.

The namesake distillery was originally established in 1810 but was closed in 1901. Though once torn down to avoid paying rent, the distillery was revived in 1963 by a joint venture by blender Charles Mackinlay & Co of Leith and two of the island’s landowners.

When first launched, the Game of Thrones whiskies proved to be an instant sell-out success, and the popularity continued with each subsequent range release.

The final one, released in November 2019 was called the ‘Six Kingdoms whisky‘ and was produced by Mortlach. It was the most premium offering to date, aged for 15 years in first-fill, Sherry-seasoned casks and finished in used American oak, ex-Bourbon casks.

New store openings

Majestic, the UK’s largest specialist wine retailer, has just announced the opening of two new branches in Beckenham and Henley.

Both stores will open in November, Beckenham in south London on the 12th November in a converted, grade listed former Chinese garage and Henley-on-Thames following a fortnight later on the 26th November in the newly created Gardiner Place development.

John Colley, CEO said; ‘The team have worked incredibly hard, in really challenging circumstances, to get these open in time for Christmas and we’ve packed them full of some fantastic new wines, beers and spirits to help spread some joy through an unprecedented festive season.’

Our experts picked some of their favourite Majestic wines from the range earlier this year, and praised the additions to the own-label Definition range and the reintroduction of some classic wines.

Majestic Christmas predictions

The retailer has also looked ahead to Christmas, and what our wine purchases might be this year.

This Christmas could be record-breaking for Sherry, following summer sales that were up 75% year on year.

English wines were also in high demand over 2020 and are sure to be a popular choice this Christmas. Many people are now searching beyond the sparkling and exploring the range of still English wines too.

As 2020 saw people trying their hand at cocktails at home during lockdown, sales of Vermouth of soured too, up 69% like for like since April. A key ingredient for your Martinis, Negronis and more – so Majestic has significantly increased its stock and selection.

Vodka has a long heritage, tracing its roots back to Eastern Europe. Mentions of vodka appear in texts from the Middle Ages in Poland, Russia and Sweden. But production spread to the rest of Eastern and Northern Europe – including Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and Belarus – and then to the rest of the word.

So what is vodka? It’s a clear spirit that can be distilled from any starch- or sugar-rich fermentable agricultural crop. These include wheat, rye, rice, sugar beets and potatoes. Distilling produces a super-strong alcoholic spirit, which is then ‘cut’ with water to bring down the abv and make it drinkable.

Modern vodkas

Obviously production methods have improved considerably over time and today modern vodkas can be distilled, once, twice, three or four times – or even hundreds of times if a process called continuous distillation is used – in search of perfect purity.

For some traditional vodka producers, distilling is enough. But producers in the west and the United States go a step further by filtering their vodka, which removes any impurities left behind after distillation.

As with distillation, vodkas can be filtered multiple times, using a variety of materials. Typically charcoal is most popular, but stone, quartz and even diamonds are used by some producers.

Choosing the right vodka

How do you find the right vodka for you? Although vodka is characterised by its neutral taste, there’s actually plenty of variety on offer: from good value buys to smooth premium vodkas and flavoured variants.

Think about how you prefer to drink vodka. Are you going to enjoy it neat – either sipped or in a shot? Or pair it with a mixer such as tonic, ginger ale or cola?

If you’re drinking vodka neat, you want something with a smooth texture – think Absolut, Finlandia, Stolichnaya or Smirnoff. For sipping vodkas head towards the premium, super-premium and luxury end of the market: brands like Grey Goose, Belvedere and Cîroc.

If you’re pairing with a mixer, texture is less important. You need a vodka that will deliver that kick of alcohol, even when it’s diluted. Good value brands like Russian Standard and Eristoff will work perfectly. The same rule applies for mixing with fruit juices: vodka cranberry or vodka and orange for example.

Fruit-flavoured vodkas are fun for shots, but also make a really simple, summery cocktail with tonic. Our favourites include Grey Goose L’Orange, Chase Rhubarb and Absolut Mango. Pair Vestal Black Cherry vodka with cola for an addictive take on cherry coke.

Vodka cocktails

If you’re using vodka to mix up cocktails, there’s plenty of choice. Because of its neutral taste vodka works brilliantly in a whole range of cocktails, from fruity mixes like the Cosmoplitan and Screwdriver; to a creamy White Russian; savoury Bloody Mary or with coffee in a punchy Espresso Martini.

It’s a helpful idea to talk to bartenders and find out their preferred choice for your favourite cocktail. But a general rule of thumb is that in drinks with just a few ingredients, always try to use a better quality of vodka.

That’s certainly true if you enjoy a sophisticated Vodka Martini. This classic mix of vodka and vermouth puts your vodka front and centre stage, so always choose a premium brand for your Vodkatini.

Are luxury vodkas worth the price?

If you Google ‘most expensive vodkas’ the search will deliver an eye-watering selection of prices. Top of the list is Billionaire’s Vodka, which is marketed as ‘the world’s most expensive vodka’ and retails for a whopping $3,750,000 (£2,789,025) for a six-litre Methusalem.

The vodka is ice-filtered, then filtered through Nordic birch charcoal and finally filtered through crushed diamonds and gems. It’s sold in a platinum- and rhodium-encased, diamond-encrusted crystal bottle, with solid gold labels and a neckband encrusted with diamonds.

While vodkas costing millions of dollars are aimed firmly at Russian oligarchs and the super-wealthy, there are more ‘affordable’ luxury bottlings running to hundreds or thousands of pounds. But are they worth the money?

Often these price-tags are simply the result of luxury packaging. For example back in 2008 Oval vodka launched its Swarovski crystal bottle, encrusted with sparkly gems and retailing for a cool £3,500 ($6,922).

If bling’s your thing, these bottles can be worth the investment. It’s no different to buying a luxury watch or jewellery.

But if you have an interest in what’s inside the bottle as well, you can find much better value lower down the price spectrum – though still with some glitzy packaging that will make a great gift for a special occasions.

For example Gem Diva Vodka is a quality Scottish wheat vodka presented in a bottle with a wand of glittering Swarovski Elements crystals. It sells at Master of Malt for £109.92.

Or what about Belvedere’s Silver Saber? This laser-cut metallic magnum contains Belvedere’s signature premium vodka, but can be customised with names, dates or a personal message for a memorable birthday or anniversary gift. Yours for £134 at Clos19.

Top vodkas to buy as a gift

Absolut Elyx

Made from winter wheat grown on a single estate in southern Sweden, Absolut’s luxury bottling Elyx is distilled in a vintage copper column still from 1921. This is one of our favourite vodkas: rich and rounded, with a luscious silky texture. Light grain aromas, plus notes of fresh bread, white chocolate and mellow spice. The palate has creamy cereal notes, vanilla, macadamia nuts and baked pastries. 42.3%

Belvedere Vodka

This high-quality vodka from Poland has an incredibly smooth texture thanks to its four-times distillation process. Made from rye, it has a creaminess on the palate with notes of vanilla and white pepper along the edge giving it a spicy boost on the finish. It’s easy to see why this is a classic and well-loved vodka. Alc 40%

Broken Clock

A distinctive English wheat vodka infused with apples and English country garden botanicals. It has a perfumed nose with fruity, floral hints, followed by a rich and rounded palate, with a lingering finish. Sweetly herbal, with a subtle russet apple note that lingers on the finish, this is a characterful sipping vodka. 40%

Cîroc Vodka

Made from grapes grown in the Charente-Maritime region of France, Cîroc was created by oenologist and Master Distiller Jean-Sebastien Robicquet in 2003. Distilled five times, it’s got a fruity palate, with fresh lemony notes, plus a honeyed sweetness and spice. Cîroc is a great choice for vodka cocktails – either the original or one of its flavoured variants such as Mango, Apple, Red Berry or French Vanilla, which is great in an Espresso Martini. 40% abv

Grey Goose Vodka

The world’s first premium vodka, which was launched in 1997. From the Cognac region in France, Grey Goose was created by François Thibault, son of a wine-grower and a master Cognac blender. It’s a versatile, super-creamy wheat vodka that works well in a whole range of cocktails. Alc 40%

Haku

Produced by Suntory, which is better known for its whiskeys, this Japanese vodka is made from Japanese white rice (the word ‘haku’ means ‘white’ in Japanese). Double distilled with bamboo charcoal filtration, the palate is pure, soft and rounded, with an edge of sweetness on the soft lingering finish that marries well with the dry vermouth in a Vodka Martini. Alc 40%

Ketel One Vodka

Made by 10th generation distillers – with over 300 years of expertise – this is one of the smoothest and cleanest vodkas on the market today. This Dutch vodka is distilled in small batches and made from 100% GMO-free European wheat. It has a crisp citrus flavour with notes of honey and a long and lively finish. It makes a great cocktail but if you like your vodka neat this is a great choice, chilled or served over a little ice. Alc 40%

Reyka Vodka

This wheat and barley vodka is distilled in Iceland using glacial spring water and sustainable energy from geothermal heat – earning it the label of ‘world’s first green vodka’ when it launched in 2005. Full and rounded, with a creamy vanilla note that plays against peppery spice and fresh citrus, Reyka delivers a classic Vodka Martini. Alc 40%

Stolichnaya Elit Vodka

A premium Russian vodka made using a revolutionary freeze filtration technique, filtering the spirit at -18°C. This makes all impurities freeze against the walls of the filtration tanks giving ultra-high levels of purity and making it one of the smoothest on the market. It has subtle flavours of creamy aniseed with a light spiciness and balanced dryness on the palate. A fantastic buy from one of the most prestigious vodka brands. Alc 40%

Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka

This Polish vodka is infused with Hierochloe Odorata grass, a unique variety grown in the Bialowieza Forest bordering Poland and Ukraine and the habitat of wild Polish bison – hence the name. Distilled from rye, the spirit is strained through bunches of hand-harvested and dried grass; every bottle contains a single blade of grass, giving a translucent, greenish colour and a herbal, aromatic and delicate taste. Notes of citrus, jasmine, black pepper and lavender can be detected. A great sipping vodka or pair it with ginger ale. Alc 40%

Pink Champagne was long disregarded as a lesser counterpart to other, more highly regarded, styles. A Blanc de Blancs or Blanc de Noirs might still muster more prestige, but the perception – of both consumers and sommeliers – is changing.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid has promised to bring back duty-free shopping with EU countries if the UK leaves the European Union without a deal.

Travellers to the EU from the UK would not have to pay excise duty on alcohol in a duty-free shop and would be entitled to bring back limited quantities of alcohol from duty-free shops in Europe.

A statement from the Exchequer’s office claims that a bottle of wine purchased duty free at Heathrow Airport on the way to the EU could be up to £2.23 cheaper.

It goes on to add that people travelling back from the EU will still be able to bring back unlimited amounts of alcohol for their own use, if they pay duty in Europe, as is currently the case.

‘As we prepare to leave the EU, I’m pleased to be able to back British travellers. We want people to enjoy their hard-earned holidays and this decision will help holidaymakers’ cash go that little bit further,’ said Javid.

Miles Beale, Chief Executive of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), was quick to use the announcement to highlight the UK’s ‘excessive’ duty levels.

‘The Chancellor’s announcement to reinstate duty free for travellers moving between the UK and the EU is welcome,’ said Beale. ‘But it is also a distraction from the main issue – the UK’s punitively high rates of excise duty. Duty Free is attractive to UK consumers wholly thanks to excessive and increasing duty levels.

‘Wine drinkers in Spain and Italy, and 13 other EU countries enjoy duty free purchases without having to leave their shores. The UK alcohol industry is one of the most heavily taxed in Europe, with wine the 3rd highest duty rate – and fastest rising in recent years. And we have the 4th highest duty rate for spirits in the EU.’

Beale went on to call for a duty cut on wine and spirits at the next budget, which the WSTA has been campaigning for.

‘There are much bigger issues which would adversely affect our industry in the event of a no deal Brexit, such as the potential introduction of tariffs on wine. So the Government shouldn’t only tinker with duty free allowances for travellers. No ifs, no buts, the Chancellor should go further to back British business and support cash-strapped consumers by cutting duty on wine and on spirits at the next Budget.’
