1970 vintage guide for Italy Piedmont

drink now

An excellent year which produced top-quality wines of great character

Weather Conditions

A cold snowy winter in Piedmont retarded the onset of the vine’s vegetative cycle. From spring onwards the growing season was mainly warm and dry. Nebbiolo grapes were harvested at good levels of ripeness.

Best Appellations

1970 produced many well-balanced, ripe wines with good perfumes in Barolo. The vintage was overshadowed by 1971 and by comparison the wines lack structure.

Best Producers

All 1970s are now in declining health and should be drunk without delay. Stars of the vintage in Barolo included Monfortino from Giacomo Conterno and Mauro Mascarello’s Monprivato, as well as Bruno Giacosa’s Barbareschi and Baroli.
