1974 vintage guide for Italy Piedmont

drink now

A good vintage after two disappointing years

Weather Conditions

A cold snowy winter in Piedmont with spring coming late. Summer was hot and dry and a mild autumn allowed the grape to ripen fully. Overall weather patterns (including summer droughts) have parallels with 1982 and the wines were similar in many respects, being fairly firm and tannic with low acidity but good, rich fruit.

Best Appellations

This was a good medium-term drinking vintage, which should all have been drunk up by now. Good examples include Barolo from Ceretto (Zonchera 1a) and Aldo Conterno.
