An over-hyped vintage at the time, the wines now seem lacking in fruit
After a fairly mild winter, 1995 was affected by extremely variable conditions for flowering and setting of fruit at the end of May and early June. Summer was cooler than normal with frequent rain and violent hailstorms in August. September was a fairly mixed bag, fine sunny days alternating with wet weather. A fine, warm, sunny start to October rescued the vintage for those prepared to wait.
A sense of relief was felt by growers. They were mostly able to harvest a small, fairly healthy crop of Nebbiolo and Barbera with decent sugar levels. Not the great vintage that a few prematurely proclaimed it, but a useful, early-drinking year. Barbaresco tends to show more ripeness than Barolo.
1995 saw the arrival of the new D.O.C.s for Langhe and Piemonte varietal wines which meant the end of the Super Vino da Tavola category in Piemonte. A number of very good examples of Langhe D.O.C. were made, e.g. Pin (Rivetti), Monpra'(Conterno-Fantino), Paitin (Pasquero). Fine Barbaresco came from Cigliuti, Gaja, Pelissero and Albino Rocca.
