Christie’s to auction DWWA wines for WaterAid

Cases of wine from this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards are to be sold this week as part of a fine wine auction at Christie’s to raise money for WaterAid.

The international charity, which is dedicated to the provision of domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education across Africa and Asia has joined forces with Christie’s and Decanter since 2005 through the Wine into Water initiative.

The initiative sees extra bottles of wine submitted to the Decanter World Wine Awards given to Christies’s to be auctioned to the public with all proceeds going to WaterAid.

Now in the seventh year of partnership, Decanter has raised over £260,000 for WaterAid, enough to have helped transform the lives of 17,3000 people around the world through improved access to clean water, improved hygiene and sanitation.

Sarah Kemp, Decanter publishing director, has been in Zambia to see the work being done by WaterAid with proceeds from the Wine into Water initiative.

Commenting on the partnership, she said: ‘I have seen firsthand the difference WaterAid’s work can make. The difference between communities who have access to clean water and those that don’t can be literally the difference between life and death. I am proud that Decanter is helping to change the balance by supporting WaterAid.’

Each case of DWWA wine to be auctioned contains 12 different bottles from the region or country indicated and all are packed in new Christie’s cartons following inspection and selection by Decanter staff.

The Wine into Water’ collection contains 90 lots, with vintages range mainly from 2006-2010 with all being drawn from the over £10 category in this year’s awards.

Christie’s Fine and Rare Wine Auction will be held on October 18 at their sale location at 8 King Street, St. James’s, London.
