Countdown to Shanghai: Q&A with Peter Sisseck

Decanter talks exclusively to Peter Sisseck, owner and winemaker of the cult classic Dominio de Pingus, about his involvement in the first Decanter Shanghai Fine Wine Encounter, which takes place at The Ritz Carlton in Shanghai on Saturday 29th November. His masterclass session has now sold out due to strong demand.

How much are you looking forward to your Masterclass Tasting?
Very much. It’s going to be a great experience for me. And I’m honoured and delighted that so many people are coming!

What vintages will you be showing?
Pingus 2008, 2009, 2010

How was the 2014 vintage in Ribera del Duero?
Without question, it will be a very important vintage.

How do you cope with jet lag when you travel to China?
I try not to go to bed early on the first night to help me adjust.

How long have you been going to China and when did you first visit Shanghai?
I’ve been coming to Asia in general since 1998. So far though, I have only been to mainland China twice, which is another reason why I’m so looking forward to spending some time in Shanghai.

How important a market is it for you?
China is not so important in volume terms for us but it is a growing and an interesting market. I feel that there’s a lot of work to do in educating people in China about Spain and Spanish wine. That’s why it’s great to be here in Shanghai so I can spread the message for Spain and Ribera del Duero.

What do you most like about Shanghai?
The drive, the energy.

Which are your three favourite restaurants in Shanghai?
I really don’t know right now, because they change so fast. But I always make a point of trying local local restaurants whenever I travel.

Peter Sisseck will be presenting a special, sold out, ‘Meet the producers’ session involving a tutored tasting of Dominio de Pingus wines at the Decanter Shanghai Fine Wine Encounter on Saturday 29th of November.
