Orlando and Attilio Pecchenino are perhaps best known for outstanding Dolcetto di Dogliani (the Siri d’Jermu immediately comes to mind), but the rich Le Coste Barolo is also a standout. I have always found its bright red fruit and minty nuances irresistible, and in 2009 it also expresses considerable power. It’s a very traditionally made Barolo: the maceration can last up to 30 days with temperatures of 28°C, and it’s aged for 36 months in 25-hectolitre oak barrels. The San Giuseppe Barolo is usually lighter-styled and more graceful. This is certainly a very high-quality, innovative estate.
Paolo Basso Blackcurrant, liquorice, aromatic herbs, cloves. Well-structured, with a savoury and deep character, well-integrated tannins and a long, expressive finish.
Ian D’Agata Pungently floral and vibrant, sour red cherry on the nose, then pure, long, silky tannins, offering a flinty minerality. A really lovely Barolo.
Michael Garner Fully developed nose of plums with capers and black pepper seasoning. Round and fleshy with liquorice-toned fruit flavours and spicy notes to the finish. Very good length and carefully managed tannins.
