Te Mata Estate, Awatea 2014
Often considered as a second tier wine to Coleraine, Awatea is a completely different blend which, as John Buck stated, reminds him more of the Te Mata estate terroir than its renowned sibling. Intense, deep purple in hue with a black core, this is much more approachable than the 2014 Coleraine, and a tad more rustic in style, but that does not detract from its drinking pleasure. Like other wines in the Te Mata stable, this has the structure to age and will improve in the bottle for many years. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot.
