Château Latour 1975

Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Forty years old, in an often-discarded vintage… sounds like the perfect challenge for Latour. And it manages once again to show just how good it is. Soft tannins, autumnal fruits that have purity and integrity even at this advanced age, given extra complexity by notes of pencil lead and soft leather, with crème de cassis on the finish. One of the few Médoc wines to be aged in new oak barrels at the time. Director Henri Martin commented on September 26 1975, as harvest was beginning, that the health of the grapes was superb, but that he felt the colour in the skins was a little lacking. He might have been pleasantly surprised by how well the colour has stood up to four decades of ageing. In the perfect window for drinking now, but honestly there is still no rush to consume.
