Franco Mondo, Vigna del Salice, Barbera d’Asti Superiore 2012
Like Dolcetto, Barbera has it tough coming from the same region as the world class Nebbiolos of Barolo and Barbaresco. Luckily, also like Dolcetto, Barbera offers a value alternative to the big guns.
This example, from Franco Mondo’s oldest, highest, south east facing slopes, is a superb Barbera d’Asti. Complex floral aromas with red fruit leads into a full bodied palate of highly concentrated plums and cherry fruit. A beautfiul balance of acidity and tannins will allow this wine to age further, however it may prove difficult not to drink.
