Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, Macán 2013
Did Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia enter the marketplace with their Macán Riojas too early? Their first vintage was 2009 and loaded with more expectation than it could fairly bear. By 2013 – certainly not Rioja’s greatest vintage in terms of climate – the wine is finally growing in stature. Aromatically, it reveals really lovely oak, with notes of very fine leather and dark fruits. The palate is vividly fresh, with balsamic notes and black cherries, followed by a complex lift of liquorice and a savoury finish.
Is this the great Rioja the world expected? Not yet, but as it settles into its purpose-built winery it is definitely on the way. 100% Tempranillo.
