Roar, Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands, California, USA 2013

Saying ‘Roar’ to a California Pinot Noir lover is a little like saying ‘Ferrari’ to an Italian who loves cars. Some of the most luscious, concentrated and rich Pinots in the state are made in Santa Lucia Highlands by this small producer. Besides the regular Santa Lucia bottling, there are two other, especially highly sought-after Roars – Garys’ Vineyard and Pisoni Vineyard. The Garys’ Vineyard lifts off the palate like a rocket launcher and is infused with attractive flavours of peat and cranberry – a great Pinot for Scotch lovers. The Pisoni Vineyard is dense, long and muscular for a Pinot Noir. Roar gets its name from the sound of the Monterey Bay winds that roar through the wineries’ vineyards. (Burgundy lovers take note, these wines are not the ‘quiet music’ versions of Pinot Noir.)
