Radio-Coteau, Las Colinas Syrah, Sonoma Coast, California, USA 2013
Every time I drink Radio-Coteau, I picture – what else? – an old-style radio, and indeed, with Las Colinas (the hillsides), the volume dial is turned up very high. There’s a gorgeousness to this blood-red Syrah, and its racy, spiced-raspberry, peppery character is intense. Of course the wine has superb richness, but what elevates it above many other California Syrahs is the way the flavours appear to float across the palate, without weight or ponderousness. The name Radio- Coteau is taken from France’s northern Rhône region, and means ‘broadcasting from the hillside’; when used colloquially, it means ‘word of mouth’.
