‘2011 was the earliest vintage ever,’ comments Axel Heinz, ‘with a heat spell at the end of August‘. The nose is unforthcoming and brooding at this stage, with very ripe dried fruit aromas and exotic, musky spice. Tasted last year at the winery, there were also smoke, cream and blackcurrant notes. Round and very fleshy on the palate, this has a plush texture with flavours of plums, cream, vanilla and spice. Big and bold, it has a fresh acidity but some dry-edged tannins on the finish – the tell-tale sign of a hot vintage. It still seems young and impenetrable at this stage.
