Andrew Will, Two Blondes Vineyard 2012
Napa tends to garner all the attention where US Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blends are concerned, but to my mind Chris Camarda of Andrew Will in Washington State is making some of the finest to be found in all of North America. Two Blondes Vineyard, the coolest site he works with and often one of my favourites in his portfolio, situated in the Yakima Valley, and in 2012 it has produced a beautiful wine, bursting with notes of cassis, plum, rich tobacco, fruitcake and violet. On the palate the wine is layered and seemless, with a deep core, great vibrancy and beautifully savoury tannic amplitude. A singular expression of site achieved in a compellingly classical aesthetic. 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, matured in a refreshingly restrained 35% new oak. Note that this is still a puppy, improving with twelve hours in a decanter.
