Terrazas de los Andes, Single Vineyard, Las Compuertas, Luján de Cuyo 2010

Mendoza may make up 75% of Argentina's Malbec output, but a new generation of producers are ensuring that its style is anything but predictable. Patricio Tapia picks 22 Malbecs to try...

From vines planted over 1,000 metres above sea level, this is a sophisticated version of Malbec. Very old vines (some from 1929) give a depth of flavour rarely seen in red from Luján de Cuyo. The texture is soft and tender, the flavours ripe and decadently sweet.
