High-quality Domaine Robert Sérol in the small town of Renaison is the best known producer in the Côte Roannaise, in part through its long association with the Troisgros family, who runs the three-star Michelin restaurant in nearby Roanne. Although the Serol family has been here since the 17th century, it was Robert who took over in 1964 with two hectares of vines and changed the focus from polyculture to wine. When his son Stéphane took over in 1996 there were 12 hectares. Today he and his wife Carine have 32 hectares of vines, mainly Gamay Saint Romain but also some Viognier and Chenin Blanc, all cultivated biodynamically. Grapes for Eclat de granite are hand picked then fermented in and matured for 7-10 months in concrete tanks. When tasted in early February, the well balanced 2019 had juicy, vibrant red fruits.
