There is no doubt about which part of the Morrisons wine range is most exciting: the addition of the higher-priced, internationally sourced The Block Series to the retailer’s The Best own-label range has brought some genuine interest and character to this once proudly northern, now US private-equity-backed supermarket’s shelves.
After lining up the first Block Series entries in the summer, the latest tasting led with the newest additions, a set of 10 new wines that were all among the highest-scoring here, with our favourites including a classically salty-peachy Rías Baixas Albariño, a typically vivid (in colour and flavour) Georgian Saperavi, and a fine single-varietal expression of Rioja’s perennial support act, Graciano.
While we like and applaud these new kids on the Block, they’re not always (on their full price at least) the best-value wines in the range. Browsing the Morrisons website as we write this report, we can see that the first tranche of wines in the series is currently part of a 25% off-if-you-buy-six deal for Morrisons More Card holders, so it might pay to wait for the newcomers to get the same treatment.
In the meantime, there are plenty of good buys to be had in the rest of the Morrisons range, which is, as ever, dominated by other The Best bottlings. Among our favourites of the newcomers are two from the Languedoc: a delightfully evocative white Rhône-alike from Minervois and a dark and lively IGP Pays d’Oc Old Vine Carignan; and a pair of brambly Iberian reds: Alto Pina Vinho Tinto from Setúbal in southern Portugal and Morrisons The Best Toro from the eponymous corner of Castilla y León in northwest Spain. There is a fine, new, Christmas-ready sherry, too, in the molasses-like form of The Best Pedro Ximénez, which takes its place in Morrisons’ reliable fortified range.

Using fruit sourced from the Val do Salnés sub-zone of Albariño’s Galician heartland in Rías Baixas, this is a textbook example of the great Atlantic Spanish white grape, in which the bright apricot and pear is matched with scintillatingly saline-seasoned, lemon-juicy acidity, leading into a properly dry, pithy finish.

Maison Jeanjean, Morrisons The Best Picpoul de Pinet, Picpoul de Pinet, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2024

Clean, dry and maximally refreshing, with a palate of soft, ripe pear and lemon and plenty of racy acidity, this has a little more concentration and verve than many examples of this quintessential Languedoc seafood partner, and works well, too, as an easy-drinking aperitif.

Terres Fidèles, Morrisons The Best Minervois Blanc, Minervois, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2024

A white Rhône-alike at a very Languedoc price, this rare UK release of Minervois blanc from Terres Fidèles is an excellent buy, the unoaked blend of Grenache Blanc, Macabeu and Rolle offering a mix of stone fruit, fresh orange and lime, and an evocative thyme-herbal note.

There’s a very southern, sun-filled feel to this just-dry, gently oaked take on the local Puglian white variety Verdeca, with a peach-skin soft and nectarine-fleshy generosity of texture and flavour, and a spritz of orange blossom and fresh acidity.

The thrill of not-quite-shrill acidity that runs through this fantastic-value dry Gascon white, right through to the crisp, dry finish, is the perfect foil for the pungent, Sauvignon-like green gooseberry fruitiness. A Christmas party contender.

Hacienda López de Haro, Morrisons The Best Marqués de los Ríos Gran Reserva Rioja, Rioja, Northern Spain, Spain, 2015

While Bodega Eguía makes Morrisons’ good-value Marqués de los Ríos Rioja and Reserva Rioja, the retailer hands the responsibility for its Gran Reserva to the meticulous Hacienda López de Haro, and the bodega doesn’t disappoint, making a gloriously polished and modern style with plenty of ripe, still-lively dark fruit, buffed and sheened with French and American oak, and just starting to take on a savoury tone.

Dugladze, Morrisons The Best Block Series 008 Georgian Saperavi, Kakheti, Georgia, 2020
Great to see Morrisons giving its customers the chance to get to know the joys of Georgia’s very own Saperavi. This is a lively, varietally pure example that offers all the inky colour of this red-fleshed (teinturier) variety, with just enough edge to the clean-cut, deep, dark blackberry fruit in its fresh acidity and tannic bite.

Made for Morrisons from fruit sourced in the original Chilean cool-climate region of Casablanca by Viña Ventisquero, this is one of the best-value Pinots on the high street, with a convincingly raspberry-juicy, fruit-driven palate, a hint of earthy beetroot and citrussy bergamot, and fine, feathery tannins.

Cave des Papes, Morrisons The Best Block Series 020 Vacqueyras, Vacqueyras, Rhône, France, 2023
A no-holds-barred hit of rich and spicy, southern sun-fuelled Grenache leads the way, with a wiry brush of gnarly Syrah in this intensely powerful Southern Rhône blend. There’s a robust and warming wildness here, with chewy tannin and boozy alcohol to spare, and just enough herb-and-spice freshness to keep it upright.

Delicato Family Vineyard, Morrisons The Best Block Series 010 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California, USA, 2023

The most expensive of Morrisons’ latest tranche of Block Series wines, the Napa Cab from Delicato is nonetheless pretty good value in the context of this often-pricey genre of red wine, and it certainly delivers on the sweetly ripe dark fruit (Ribena-esque blackcurrant and black cherry jam), with a careful dose of mocha oak and polished tannins.

Bodegas Fariña, Morrisons The Best Toro, Toro, Castilla y Léon, Spain, 2022
Toro’s take on Tempranillo (aka Tinta de Toro) has a not-unjustified reputation for going heavy on concentration and oak, but this is a relatively restrained example that is not shy with its ripe mulberry fruit, presenting it in a highly drinkable, clean-cut style with just a kiss of oak.

Aroa, Morrisons The Best Navarra Garnacha, Navarra, Spain, 2023
As so often in contemporary supermarket wine ranges, it’s the stocks of old Garnacha vines in north-eastern Spain that provide the fruit for one of the best-value reds on the list, with Navarra’s Bodegas Aroa producing a wine in which de-luxe cherry juiciness meets plum-skin and blood-orange tang.

Terres Fidèles, Morrisons The Best Old Vine Carignan, IGP Pays d'Oc, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, 2024

There’s a softening 14% of Grenache here, which gives a little jammy generosity, perhaps, to the keen, dark and wiry intensity of the old-vine Carignan in a red that is winter-ready and warming, with liquorice-edged blackberry, elderberry, and pleasingly grippy, ripe tannins.

Sourced from UK supplier Boutinot’s Rhône vineyards, this is a really classy take on the drowsy, stone-fruited appeal of white Rhône, with a mouth-coating, almost waxy feel, and baked apple, fresh, ripe apricot and strawberry fruit, given juicy freshness and great drinkability by a trickle of cool acidity.

Emilio Lustau, Morrisons The Best Pedro Ximenez, Jerez, Andalucia, Spain

A new addition to Morrisons’ well-regarded own-label sherry range by Emilio Lustau, this is an ideal partner for Christmas pudding, thanks to its intense treacle and blonde chocolate syrupy richness, with that immense sweetness leavened by some soft fig and macadamia-nutty characters.
