It’s clear that an expert hand is behind the fortified wines at 919. The heady nose is full of rich toffee, burnt butter, caramelised bananas, fig jam and golden syrup. It’s like a batch of Anzac biscuits turned up loud. The palate is luscious and echoes all those comforting, calorie-laden aromas. Treacle tart, malty flapjacks, toasted hazelnuts and banoffee pie. As with all great fortified wines, there’s a lifted acidity which keeps it lively, avoiding it edging into cloying territory. Slurpable indulgence.
