The great asset of ancient vines is the rare quality of the fruit they produce, being less a statement about an intense concentration of power and more about achieving an effortless balance of integrated flavours and tannins. Dry grown on their own roots, the Freedom block planted in 1843 is the world’s oldest surviving Shiraz that produces a single-site wine. Silky tannins ensure a smooth ride through a mid-palate where the meld of plum, blackberry, cocoa, mulberry and a hint of wild sage are tied with oak-influenced vanilla. It’s special because of its rarity, but its greatest asset is the dreamy quality of its sustained flavours.
