Founded in 1985 by Geneviève Buecher and François Barmès, this Wettolsheim estate is now led by their children Maxime and Sophie. They tend their 18ha with garden-like precision, in adherence with the Biodyvin biodynamic certification achieved in 2001. The vineyard spans the marly-limestone of grands crus Hengst (1.37ha) and Pfersigberg (0.25ha), and the oolitic limestone of Steingrübler (0.9ha). Following the tragic death of François in 2011, Maxime has overseen both vineyard and cellar, crafting wines that champion vibrant fruit and mineral focus, exemplified by the gastronomic 2022 Hengst Riesling. Thierry Meyer: Aromatic, spicy nose with refined petrol, herbs and citrus peel. The long palate is fat and full, pure, fresh, ripe and complex. Vincenzo Arnese: Great intensity on the nose, stone fruit elegance and a Cantaloupe melon hint. Rounded and rich, great structure, long and vibrant. Delightful. Claire Thevenot MS: Power and finesse, savoury and saline, showing its grace and elegance with panache (Hengst in the local dialect means ‘stallion’). Spicy.
