I'll get the bad news out of the way first; this second wine of Trotanoy only began in 2009 and is likely to be stopped again by 2026 once the new plantings come into play and get enough ageing under their belt - so I suggest getting hold of this while you can. 

'This is honestly not a vineyard that should produce a second wine,' says Edouard Moueix, Deputy General Manager of J-P Moueix Wines which owns Château Trotanoy, by way of explanation, 'but for now there are a few areas that don't perfectly match the style of Trotanoy, so we make Espérance with those vines'. 

What you'll find is a recognisably Pomerol wine that at eight-years-old is pretty much ready to drink, although it remains rigorous. It majors on red fruits compared to the black fruits of Trotanoy itself but it has clear backbone and acidity with good concentration. It doesn't have the complex generosity of the main wine though and for me this vintage is feeling just a little tough right now. I recommend the 2009 Esperance de Trotanoy if you can find it, which I had a few weeks ago and loved.
