Established in 2002, Alliance Loire comprises eight Loire cooperatives. Les Nivières, from the Cave de Saumur co-op, is made from grapes grown on the sand and limestone slopes around the village of Brossay in the heart of Saumur. The harvested grapes are gently heated to limit extraction of tannins and ensure aromatic intensity. Following a short (eight-day) maceration, ageing takes place in underground cellars dug out of the local ‘tufa’ limestone for six to eight months. Jim Budd: Mid-plum colour, light red fruit aromas, good texture, opulent. A powerful wine, and brilliant value. Ben Llewellyn: Dense core of black fruit with refined tannins and balanced acidity. This is compact and restrained with a long life ahead of it. Laure Patry: Liquorice and macerated cherries. Generous on the palate with a lean texture, firm dry tannins and a peppery finish. Very good value.
