While Selva delle Monache is the lighter and fresher wine of Ettore Sammarco estate on the Amalfi Coast, Grotta Piana is a single vineyard at 500 metres where hundred-year-old vines are planted. The blend of Ginestrella, Biancolella and Falanghina is fermented then aged half in wood and half in stainless steel. The oaky character is still evident and it's not really ready to drink yet, but it's underpinned by cedar, pear, wax and seaweed aromas. The palate is again oak dominated, with a soft and mellow texture, cedar wood aromas and emerging Mirabelle fruit character. The acidity doesn't leave you at any point and the finish is extremely precise.
